PTS 9.5 develop multimedia presentations, based on sound principles of design, with increasing confidence, efficiency and independence

RPSD 9.2 create and use electronic charts, maps, tables, graphs, spreadsheets, and databases to collect, analyse and display data independently

In our unit on “Integers and Rational Numbers” we have worked towards achieving an understanding of the various curriculum “outcomes” listed above. In this project we will assess our level of understanding of these outcomes, as well as make use of our IEI technology and considerable software applications. As an added component we shall study the “value” of a company’s stock over a four week period.

What I Am Given:

·  Opportunity to learn how to develop a PowerPoint® presentation using IEI technologies.

·  Opportunity to learn how to develop an Inspiration® mind-mapping software for planning my project.

·  Opportunity to learn how to develop and use graphs from Microsoft Excel® or Appleworks® spreadsheet software.

·  Opportunity to “cut and paste” from a spreadsheet program to a PowerPoint® presentation.

What I Need to Do:

·  Develop a research project plan using Inspiration®. A copy of this plan must be submitted prior to completing the project.

·  Collect statistical data on stocks and/or mutual funds found in the Halifax Chronicle Herald® or other news outlet.

·  Develop a PowerPoint® presentation with a minimum of ten (10) slides based on your own research (books, data supplied by teacher, internet, etc...). Please include at least one slide on each of the following:

1.  About your company

What do they sell. What unique qualities about them are everyone familiar with. Size of company. Facts about how well they have done.

2.  a history of the development of your company.

How it got started. How rapidly it has grown. Other products they sell.

Other interesting facts

3.  What are the company symbols?

What is your company’s stock symbol? Insert a graphic of the company logo

4.  A description of what the Stock Market is. Research this topic and summarize your findings.

5.  Present your company’s Stock Market Value (ie. price per share).

Present the changes in stock market price for the past month in a graphical form (line graph is the norm).

6. What the consumers say:

Ask your friends and family their opinions of your company’s products.

Since you are trying to persuade others to invest in your company, only include the positive comments. Advertisers do that all the time. This information will be found through a survey of your peers and family members.

7. Invest in Your Company

Include your sales pitch here. Why should your team or class invest in this company?

8.  Bibliography: Include all sources: Names of newspaper(s), Website addresses, other…

·  Present your PowerPoint® presentation in class. Be prepared to answer a few questions on the data display and data analysis. How are integers used in the stock market?

How Will I Be Assessed?

·  A self assessment will be used to assess the “planning process” used in the development of this project. (after day 1)

·  A peer assessment will be used to assess the presentation in class.

·  A scoring rubric will be used to assess the “product” (PowerPoint®)

·  A self assessment will be used to assess the group “process” you went through to develop this project.
