Join us for our World Polio Day kickoff event
Dear fellow Rotarians:
It is our pleasure to announce Rotary’s annual World Polio Day kickoff event on 23 October in New York City. We'll use this occasion to shine a light on Rotary’s leadership in the fight that has brought us This Close to ending polio.
The Live stream event, co-sponsored by UNICEF, will bring together our partners in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, government officials, and global health leaders from nongovernmental organizations and will mobilize more than 30,000 supporters.
July and August brought great milestones in the polio eradication effort. For the first time in history, Nigeria -- then all of Africa -- marked one year with no new polio cases caused by the wild virus.
We are closer to making good on our promise to end polio forever, but there's still work to be done. As we protect the progress made in Africa, we focus even more sharply on Afghanistan and Pakistan.
Our World Polio Day kickoff event is our opportunity to update participants around the world on our progress and next steps and inspire them to share their voices, donate, or advocate for eradication as we near the finish line.
We invite you tojoin usand watch the event live, starting at 18:30 New York time (UTC-4) or later -- a recording will be made available. We also ask you to raise awareness of our polio eradication effort in your own community and build a local audience for our World Polio Day event. Visit the End Polio Now website to downloadresourcesthat can help you raise awareness and funds. Share this information with your Rotary clubs, districts, communities, and elected officials.
Thirty years ago, we told the world what Rotary believes: that we can achieve the eradication of polio. Our dream is becoming reality. For every child, on World Polio Day, let’s push ahead to the reality of a polio-free world.
Warm regards,
Rotary International President K.R. Ravindran and Rotary Foundation Chair Ray Klinginsmith
ABCs of Rotary- Official Directory
How do you find out when the Rotary club meets in Toowoomba, Pondicherry or Recklinghausen? Simply turn to the Official Directory of Rotary International. The approximately 750-page annual publication is filled with current information about Rotarians and Rotary clubs. The meeting day, time and location of everyone of the more than 33,000 clubs is listed.
From the Rotary Club of Aabenraa, Denmark, to Zwolle, Netherlands, the Official Directory provides the name and address of each club president and secretary, as well as the number of club members and charter date. The Official Directory also records a wealth of information about the more than 543 Rotary districts, as well as the composition and purpose of all official Rotary committees. Included are names and addresses of the current RI Board of Directors and all previous boards. There is a list of all past RI presidents with a review of their themes. An excellent directory of hotels around the world is an added feature.
Official Directory can be obtained from the RI World Headquarters in Evanston, Illinois or from Our Delhi office at a cost of US $ 9.00. It is a perfect guidebook for making Rotary contacts when you travel.
Polio Type 2 Wild virus officially eradicated from the world

Oldest Trees in the World
1. OLD TJIKKO (SWEDEN)
The world’s oldest known living tree sprouted sometime during the last Ice Age, roughly 9,550 years ago. This 16-foot spruce in the Dalarna province of Sweden may look more like a Charlie Brown Christmas Tree, but don’t be fooled: this little guy’s root system got started back when the British Isles were still connected to Europe by an ice bridge. According to Wired, geologist Leif Kullman, who discovered the tree, named it after his dead dog.
2. METHUSELAH (CALIFORNIA)
Methuselah, a bristlecone pine tree from California’s White Mountains, is thought to be almost 5,000 years old—and the oldest non-clonal tree in the world. The exact location of the gnarled, twisted Methuselah is a Forest Service secret, for its protection (that might not be it above). In 1964, a slightly older tree by the name of Prometheus was accidentally felled by a scientist who didn’t realize the tree was as old as it was. To be cont’d…

Humour
But the psychiatrist really helped me a lot.
I would never answer the phone, because I was afraid.
Now I answer it whether it rings or not.

Rotary Wisdom
“We can tell people how glad we are to belong to such a fine organization. We can tell of our…achievements. But Rotary will never flourish and never accomplish those dreams we are so proud to own unless we can so live; that Rotary may be proud of us.”
