Waco Advocacy Center–The Advocacy Center is looking for Crisis Intervention Advocates. Volunteers carry a cell phone to answer a 24/7 crisis hotline and go to Waco hospitals to provide support for sexual assault survivors. Training begins January 24, 2008. Camp Fire USA Tejas Council – They are looking for volunteers to create and send care packages overseas to our troops. This event will take place April 25th – April 27th. If interested, please contact the local Camp Fire office at (254)752-5515.

HOT Regional History Fair – The HOTRHF is looking for volunteers to help with various duties needed to run the fair. The fair gathers students in grades 5-12 to compete in writing papers, presenting performances, creating exhibits, etc. This year’s theme is Conflict and Compromise in History. AVANCE Waco - The AVANCE Parent-Child Education Program focuses on parent education, early childhood development, brain development, literacy, and school readiness. The program serves predominantly poor Latino families in underserved communities. AVANCE's mission is "Unlocking America's Potential" and the program accomplishes this one child, one family, one community at a time by teaching parents to be advocates and role models for their children. Volunteers are need in a variety of areas including: reading to children, cleaning, wrapping gifts, serving food during special events, data entry, clerical support, lawn maintenance and painting. Greenview Manor – Greenview Manor nursing home has a variety of ways that students can volunteer including: group activities, one-on-one visits, music therapy, etc. Greenview Manor has an open door policy for anyone form Baylor and they are open to students who want to do research. They do like having social work majors; however, they are open to all students. If interested, please contact Rod Bickford at (254)761-3410.

Mission Waco – Mission Waco is looking for Baylor students to serve as volunteers in the areas of: after school tutoring, tutoring at West Ave. Elementary and King’s Club. McLennan County Library – The library is looking for two students who would be willing to volunteer for their tutoring program once a week. They need to have basic strengths in math, science, reading and English and work well with children ages K-8th grade. Tutoring program begins January 28th. Lakewood Villa Apartments - Need for volunteers to mentor/tutor kids living in Lakewood Villa Apartments. The apartment complex has started an after school program to help address the needs of the low income families living there. The apartment complex is located at 1601 Spring Street, Waco, TX 76704. Rapoport Academy High School – This local charter school is looking for Baylor students who are interested in using their particular field of interest to help high school students excel in the classroom and beyond. Several opportunities are available including:

  • Tutoring five students that are enrolled in an online college algebra class (flexible hours)
  • One-on-one mentoring for a few special case students who need help with their schoolwork and someone to talk to (flexible hours throughout the day)
  • One Book One Waco discussion leaders (Same Kind of Different as Me by Ron Hall and Denver Moore) for after school (4:00-5:00)
  • Tutoring students who are behind in basic writing, reading, and math during their enrichment period during school hours
  • Helping students form and instructing a Jazz Band. (students already play piano, guitar or trumpet) They need someone to help direct them after school around 4 – 5 pm on some afternoons.
  • Tutoring students who are failing at least one class from 3:20 – 4:00
  • STEM Project – Helping students develop and complete a project focusing on science, technology, engineering and/or math.
  • The freshmen are particularly interested in discrimination
  • The sophomores are interested in poverty
  • Help students begin, develop and complete a One-Act Play to be performed at UIL Competitions in future years (looking for someone with theater experience)
