Rie Rogers Mitchell, Ph.D., ABPP, holds Professor Emeritus status in educational psychology and counseling at California State University, Northridge (CSUN). She earned a Ph.D. in counseling psychology (UCLA), a Master of Arts degree in psychology (UCLA), and a Master of Science degree in counseling (University of Utah).
Rie is a Licensed Psychologist and a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in California. She is a Certified Sandplay Therapist and Teacher (CST-T), a Registered Play Therapist and Supervisor (RPT-S), and a National Certified Counselor (NCC). She holds a diplomate in counseling psychology awarded by the American Board of Professional Psychology (ABPP). She has served as president of the International Society of Sandplay Therapy, and president of Sandplay Therapists of America.
She co-authored (with Harriet Friedman) the books: Sandplay: Past, Present and Future (Routledge, 1994) and Supervision of Sandplay Therapy (Routledge, 2007). She has published numerous book chapters and journal articles in sandplay and other areas of psychology and higher education. She presents and teaches internationally and throughout the United States, and received the Distinguished Teaching Award at California State University, Northridge.
Rie lives in Calabasas with her husband, Rex, an emeritus professor of management at California State University, Northridge, who holds doctorates in chemical engineering and management. Their son, Scott, is a graduate of the University of California, Santa Barbara, in psychology and physics.
