(Slide 1: What is a Cosmetic Chemist?)
A Cosmetic Chemist is someone who applies their knowledge of chemistry to Cosmetics. Cosmetic Chemist is a term that includes many different types of jobs.

Education is an important part of starting any career. High school students that aspire to be a cosmetic chemist should take courses that include mathematics and hands-on labs. Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry, Pre-Calculus, Calculus, Biology, Biology II, Chemistry, and Anatomy would be helpful courses to be taken in high school. The collage education required for becoming a cosmetic chemist is at least a bachelors degree in chemistry, microbiology, chemical engineering, or biology.

There are thousands of job openings for a cosmetic chemist. This is because no matter what state the economy is in, people always want to look good.To begin, first you must research all the different types of jobs for a cosmetic chemist. The different careers for a cosmetic chemist include:cosmetic formulator, quality control chemist, analytical chemist, process engineering,regulatory scientist, and sales.

“Cosmetic Formulator” is a fancy way of saying inventor. As a cosmetic formulator, your job is to invent and test new cosmetics in laboratories.The best part of this job is using your imagination to create new things. However, organization and time are required for this kind of job, which often has long and tiring hours. There are many deadlines and pressure is tough. The salary, however, is quite enough to keep the job going. The salary is a whopping 66,000 dollars a year.

Quality Control Chemists are kind of like inspectors; they evaluate all the products produced by a company. They make sure the products meet safety standards and corporate quality. Quality Control Chemists must be able to solve problems and use their time wisely. The average pay a year for a Quality Control Chemist is 45,000 dollars, which is nothing to sneeze at considering that minimum wage is only an average of 10,500 dollars a year.

Analytical Chemists spend most of their time in the lab. They study substances and how they react with organic materials. When analytical chemists are not in the lab, they are usually still brushing up on their science skills. Being an analytical chemist is almost like still being in a 12th grade chemistry class, minus the teacher. An analytical chemist is always discovering new things. For just doing some research, the yearly pay for this job is a respectable 55,000 dollars a year.

A process engineer is very important because they supply the rest of the chemists in a company with the right equipment they need. They make sure that the equipment they supply will not react with the chemicals the other chemists are studying. This job is actually a lot more difficult than it sounds because new equipment is always in demand. The salary for this job is a perfect 75,000 dollars a year.

Regulatory Scientists are exactly the same as ananalytical chemist, except that regulatory scientists have the government evaluating everything they do. Pressure will be really tough because the government can be very scary. The salary for this job, unlike the salary for an analytical chemist, is overpaid in my opinion. Instead of making 55,000 dollars like an analytical chemist, Regulatory scientists make 80,000 dollars a year.

As a sales chemist, your job is to explain to customers how each cosmetic product works scientifically. A sales chemist will usually carry a flip chart and speak at conventions. When a customer gets confused, a sales chemist will have to have patience with them and explain how the cosmetic works for the third time. The salary is a nice 52,000 dollars a year, plus all the goody-bags from cosmetic parties.

All these Scientists and chemists are called Cosmetic chemists. Their work conditions and salaries vary. But their education is roughly the same. Cosmetic Chemists usually all have bachelors degrees in chemistry, microbiology, chemical engineering, or biology. Education is an important part to ANY career.
