JOHN WALKER MANNING
DISTINGUISHED MENTOR AND TEACHER AWARD
The purpose of the award is to recognize faculty who have shown a commitment to Georgetown College by being involved in extracurricular activities with students and who have also demonstrated excellence in teaching.
The amount of the award will be $2,500, as donated by the late Dr. Manning’s widow Mrs. Sylvia Beard. This award will be presented each year at the college's Opening Convocation ceremony in the Fall.
CRITERIA FOR SELECTION
Criteria used to select the Manning Award recipients will include, but not be limited to, the following:
a. Nominees shall be full-time, tenure-track faculty, including librarians with academic rank, who have been employed by the College for a minimum of two years.
b. Nominees shall have received favorable student evaluations for the previous two academic years.
c. Nominees shall have demonstrated leadership in mentoring and counseling students in their academic course work and other aspects of college life during the past two years.
d. Nominees shall have received favorable department evaluations for past two years.
e. Nominees shall have demonstrated collegiality, Georgetown attitude and spirit, and high moral character.
f. Nominees shall have contributed to the college academic community above and beyond regular duties during the past two years.
NOMINATION PROCESS
Nominations for the Manning Award may be submitted by faculty, staff and students. All nominations shall be in writing and submitted to the Provost no later than May 16 of each year. Individuals nominating faculty should address in their nominations the basis for the nomination and how the nominee meets the criteria listed.
A committee chaired by the Provost shall select the award recipients during the summer. This committee shall include, in addition to the Provost/Dean of the College, the Faculty Chair, Dean of Students, an editor of the Georgetonian and the President of the Association of Georgetown Students. The committee’s recommendation(s) shall be approved by the President.
