UW Eau Claire / Personal Advising Code (PAC)
Approximately three weeks before the start of the registration period, faculty can view their advisees' PAC and appointment time on MyBlugold CampS. Students should be encouraged to make an appointment with their advisers well ahead of their registration appointment time.
PACs are used to indicate a student has seen an adviser. The following students require PACS: students who have completed fewer than 60 credits; students in academic difficulty, no matter how many credits they have; all College of Business students; all new transfer students pursuing their first degree.
UW Green Bay / Sent email – does not appear to be blanket advising holds but looking for clarification
UW-La Crosse / No blanket holds
Some majors use an advising holds
Use on 1st semester frosh
Mandatory holds for probation advisor
Same model as UWS – undeclared/exploratory in advisement center, and all declared majors to the departments
UW-Madison / Cross College Advisor at UW-Madison. Due to our large caseloads at UW-Madison we use very few advising holds. There are a few smaller majors that utilize holds, but the vast majority of majors/schools and colleges at UW-Madison do not use them. We are going to start putting holds on students who have senior standing but who have not yet declared a major, but we won't be doing that until next spring so I don't know the outcome.
UW-Milwaukee / Pam – department is different – at risk and not admitted to program. Auto hold in PAWS every term to see advisor. Advisor can add a hold if wanting/needing to see an advisee.
Hold generally put on:
  • 1st year
  • Probation
There is a discussion to have a blanket hold happening with the retention committee – may be doing so – enhancing advising committee – maybe first years
Email campaigns done each term encouraging students to meet with advisor
Undeclared using a “coaching” advising model (NACADA) – life coaching
UW-Oshkosh / UARC does not require holds for all students – far too many advisees to see. Only use it for students that are:
  • On probation
  • Frosh with risk – low ACT or GPA
  • Mandatory group advising – if miss they get hold and have to do a make put activity
  • Transfer if never have seen an advisor
Different colleges do it differently
UARC sees students up to transition to program – admissions or credits (dual/intake advising)
Benefits – yes especially for at-risk students
UW-Parkside / The most common hold is the Academic Advising Hold which is put on everyone's account every semester. To lift the Advising hold you'll have to meet with your Academic Advisor.
UW-Platteville / LVM 11/2/15
UW-River Falls / Yes – all students get a hold each term to meet with an advisor
Academic Success Center – undeclared/exploratory students – fill out advising form and proactive advising
Declared majors go to departments, unless they are going into El Ed or business, then they go to professional advisor until accepted into program.
UW-Stevens Point / Left message – all advisors are busy 11/2/15
UW-Stout / Director Janine Thull – would be willing to have larger conversation about how their program is set up
On the chopping block – Huron report recommended cutting to save $600,000
FROSH intake model – advise in summer for fall and fall for spring
1563 students FROSH
Undeclared 400?
Close to 2000 divided between 7 advisors (252 – 286 caseload)
All frosh have hold and all undeclared – must meet to lift hold
Advisement day – full day with no classes devoted
Some programs place a hold to all advisees and if they attend program meeting on advising day, then hold is lifted
2 meets – one in major and one with undeclared/frosh advisor
Priority
  • Disability
  • 3-year
  • Honors
  • Vets
  • Athletes
  • Seniors right after
Transfers – yes and no – all undeclared are met in this office
Transfer Credit Report (TCR) – to student, program director and advisement center – template to faculty advisor to contact student – one person is point to check in with student to make sure they have connected
Quality control rest of students
Would like to know the results
Has a career services office that does coops, career fairs, “end product” things but does not do career counseling – advising does in conjunction with major and teaches a class
All professional advisors have masters degrees
UW-Whitewater / LVM 11/2
It does appear that they use holds, but unable to find in what circumstances.
Northland College / Fully faculty model – no advisement center
All students get a hold each semester that they must meet with an academic advisor
