ACCOUNTABLE TO:Head of Campaigns, Policy and Research

LOCATION:The Jewellery Quarter, Birmingham, UK

HOURS:37.5 hours per week

SALARY: £18,000 – £21,000 per annum

We are looking for two exceptional campaigners towork in our growing Campaigns, Policy and Research team. The roles will providepolicy knowledge and campaigning skills in order to influence decision makers in politics, public services and business to consider the rights and needs of vegans and the benefits of a more vegan society. The post holders will also contribute to our public facing campaigning work to raise awareness of the benefits of veganism and support the needs of existing vegans.

Coming either from a policy or campaigning background, the ideal candidates will have strong project management skills, an understanding of political frameworks, and experience of influencing behaviour and policy change.

Campaigns and Policy Officer

Person Specification and Job Description

DUTIES & KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Implement policy, research and campaigns activities, liaising with politicians, civil servants, other non-profit organisations, researchers and public sectorprofessionals

The following duties will be shared between the two Campaigns and Policy Officers.

Influence political debate

  • Ensure that the Vegan Society’s work is informed by knowledge of political systems and processes, priorities and charity regulations (e.g. Lobbying Act)
  • Respond to calls for evidence by legislators or Ministerial Departments on relevant issues
  • Track the political agenda and identify opportunities to raise The Vegan Society’s concerns in UK and EU parliament, local government and devolved administrations
  • Prepare information and advice for Parliamentarians and other officials
  • Contribute to the development of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Vegetarianism and Veganism, identifying topics for debate and approaching key stakeholders for attendance
  • Organising The Vegan Society’s presence at Party Conferences, identifying opportunities and organising events

Campaigns

  • Identify and research key issues to guide the society’s campaigns and policy work
  • Keep up to date with relevant reports, providing summaries for the wider team and using content to support our campaigns
  • Support the team by implementing and evaluating effective and evidence-based campaigns and policy to achieve The Vegan Society’s objectives, ensuring information is researched and kept up to date
  • Plan and implement events, which influence and build The Vegan Society’s profile with decision-makers
  • Develop and manage The Vegan Society’s national network of campaigner volunteers, providing them with campaign materials and briefings to use on a local level
  • Develop and maintain relationships with decision-makers and Parliamentarians
  • Maintain an effective database of relationships and contacts
  • Work as part of a project team, maintaining programme schedules, reporting on project status and providing progress reports for senior management
  • Contribute to the development of campaigns and policy materials using a variety of media
  • Support the Head of Campaigns, Policy & Research in identifying and developing partnerships with other relevant organisations to co-ordinate approaches to legislators, and to participate in similar joint national and international campaigns

Communications and marketing

  • Communicate The Vegan Society's campaigns and policy work including writing for publications, giving presentations and attending events and conferences
  • Work with the Media and PR Officer to assist in securing media coverage in support of The Vegan Society’s campaigns and policy objectives
  • Work with the Communications team to ensure that The Vegan Society’s internal and external channels contain relevant and up to date information on project and campaigning activities, and provide high quality content on progress of campaigns
  • Work with the wider team to ensure that opportunities for new revenue streams are explored in campaign planning.

ESSENTIAL / DESIRABLE
Knowledge
  • Knowledge of vegan issues and how they impact politics, businesses and organisations
  • A broad understanding of how politics, business and the third sector operate
  • Understanding of how to influence policy and behaviour change

  • A background in evidence-based policy work
  • A background in campaigning

Education / qualifications & training
  • Educated to degree level or similar relevant qualifications
