Dear Magnus,
The IEEE 802.11 WG thanks 3GPP SA2 for the information regarding informing them of the ongoing work on IMS Emergency calls. Based on a preliminary discussion, WeIEEE 802.11 would like to inform 3GPP of the following IEEE 802.11 WG activities which are that can be considered relevant to handling of Emergency Call Services.
· TGk has defined a mechanism for carrying location information (per RFC-3825) fromone IEEE 802.11station to another IEEE 802.11 station. The mechanism for calculating/provisioning location information on the AP are not however being considered by TGk. (note: clarify that station includes AP. Perhaps use STA/AP)
· TGv is currently considering proposals for calculating location information relative to the IEEE 802.11 AP for an IEEE 802.11 station.
· TGu currently has a requirement to provide capability advertisement for WLANs supporting Eemergency Ccalls.
· TGu currently has a requirement to handle authentication issues to support Emergency Calls when the user does not have authentication credentials but both the network and the WLAN station are capable of supporting VoIP calls.
The IEEE 802.11 WG willould sendsend out a more detailed response on these activities at a later date and willould continue to keep 3GPP informed of the status of these activities and any other activities related to support of Emergency Calls over WLAN.
We look forward to additional discussions, and invite you to send feedback and possibly attend future IEEE 802.11 face-to-face meetings to discuss this document, if so desired. The next two IEEE 802.11 meetings are during the weeks of November 13th – 18th , 2005 (Vancouver, British Colombia, Canada) and January 15th – 20th , 2006 (Waikoloa, Hawaii, USA).
For your reference, ANSI/IEEE Std. 802.11Ò-1999, as amended by IEEE Std. 802.11a, IEEE Std. 802.11b, IEEE Std. 802.11b-COR1, IEEE Std. 802.11d, IEEE Std. 802.11g-2003, IEEE Std. 802.11h-2003, IEEE Std. 802.11i-2004, IEEE Std. 802.11j-2004 is the current version of the IEEE 802.11 Standard.
