Guidelines for Taking Matching Tests

  1. Read all the items in both columns before making any matches.
  2. One column may have more items than the other.
  3. Start by making the easiest matches.
  4. Cross out items in both columns after making a match.
  5. Make all correct matches before guessing at others.
  6. Make your best guess for any remaining matches.

Guidelines for Taking Completion Tests

  1. Read the statement and think of what is missing.
  2. Write and answer that fits the meaning of the statement.
  3. Be sure the answer fits the statement grammatically.
  4. If the length of the blank lines varies, use the length as a clueto the length of your answer.

Guessing on Tests

If you are clueless, and if there is no “guessing” penalty for incorrect answers, go ahead and guess. Here are a few guidelines:

1. If two answers are similar, choose one.

2. If two answers have similar looking words (intermediate-intermittent) choose one.

3. For sentence completions, choose grammatically correct sentences.

4. Math: If two quantities are almost the same, choose one.

5. If answers cover a wide range (4.5, 66.7, 88.7, 90.1, 5000.11) choose one in the middle.
