The Law Society of South Africa (LSSA) launched its first election observer mission in 2014. Attorneys were stationed in voting stations across the country to observe the election process. A final observer report was compiled in which the LSSA reported on its observations and concluded as to whether the elections were indeed free and fair. This report was sent to the IEC and released to the public.

In the run-up to the 2016 Local Government Elections, the LSSA recognises that the main cornerstone of a democracy is the ability of citizens to choose an individual to hold public office and, free and fair elections are the usual mechanism by which modern democracies operate. It further recognises that the authority of the government can derive only from the will of the people as expressed in genuine, free and fair elections. The will of the people can only be justly exercised if citizens are properly educated in their rights as voters.

Therefore, the LSSA and its education division (LEAD), have resolved to provide advanced voter education to you as a legal professional to educate you on your rights as a voter and basic electoral law principles. This will ultimately empower legal professionals to be beacons of democracy in your society for the upcoming 2016 Local Government Elections and equip you with the tools to Take Responsibility for Democracy.

Legal professionals and attorneys who wish to learn more about voting rights, electoral systems and processes, prohibited conduct in elections and general elements of electoral law. The build-up to the 2016 Local Government Elections is well underway – make sure you understand the election laws.

R450 (including VAT) per delegate, a light lunch will be included.
