The Citizens’ Crusade to Preserve Mason Neck
Liz Hartwell was a leading environmental activist and successful advocate of protecting the Mason Neck, Virginia peninsula for the preservation of the American Bald Eagle. She won dozens of awards and honors for her role in protecting the environment, the Bald Eagle, the water quality of the Potomac River, and in leading the successful citizen effort to preserve over 5,000 acres of the Mason Neck peninsula in southeastern FairfaxCounty. Her ongoing crusade resulted in the 2,277-acre Mason Neck National Wildlife Refuge; the first American refuge established for the protection of the bald eagle; the 1,804-acre MasonNeckState Park, and the 1,003-acre PohickBayRegionalPark.
During her environmental career, Liz Hartwell was:
- FairfaxCounty’s 1971 Citizen of the Year;
- Vice Chair, Northern VaRegionalPark Authority;
- Secretary and VP, Conservation Council of Virginia;
- Chairman of the Citizens Council for a Clean Potomac;
- Elected - Committee of 100 on the FederalCity;
- Organizer of the Friends of Mason Neck;
- Appointed to the Va Agriculture Board by Gov. Holton;
- Member Chairman, Fairfax Wetlands Board, 7 years;
- Member, NOVAPotomacRiver Basin Committee;
- Va. Wildlife Federation’s Conservationist of the Year;
- Recognized by the Virginia Izaak Walton League, the FairfaxCounty Board of Supervisors; and the Virginia Division of Parks and Recreation;
- Given 1990 Elly DoyleFairfaxPark Auth. Serv. Award
- Historic archaeological Tauxenent Indian site visited by Captain John Smith in 1608 was named the “Hartwell Site” by the Fairfax County Heritage Resources Branch.
