Healthy Schools National Criteria – Healthy Eating
Whole school approach to healthy eating
Role and responsibilities of Healthy Eating Adviser
· Encourage schools to take part in the Healthy Schools programme.
· Support schools to achieve and maintain Healthy Schools Status.
· Support with writing food policies.
· Carry out initial support sessions.
· Carry out moderation visits and write up report for special edition of celebrating success booklet.
· Support with setting up and maintaining breakfast clubs.
· Food safety advice for new food tech rooms and clubs.
· Chair the Countywide Schools Food Group.
· Attend the Countywide food group.
· Attend the CYPP group for healthy weight.
· Supported the 5 a day campaign and the introduction of the free fruit scheme for all nursery and infant pupils in a school setting.
· Guidance to schools and parents around healthy eating and legislation.
Projects
· Initial work with 50 most deprived schools in Herts based on Free School Meal (FSM) data.
· Introduced work Special Schools.
· Open to all schools in Herts.
· Offered assemblies, taster sessions making fruit smoothies and kebabs, talks to parents and staff meetings.
· Family learning with Herts Adult and Family Learning Service (HAFLS) in schools and children’s centres. Adult and children together.
Courses
· JEX (Junior Eating and Exercise) project ran in targeted Dacorum schools. Focusing on healthy eating and physical activity in fun group sessions.
· Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH) food safety level 1 and 2 course for school staff and those working in breakfast and after school clubs.
· CIEH Nutrition level 2 course for school staff.
· Healthy and Wellbeing team course on running an effective Healthy Lifestyles Course in school.
· Health Matters and Essentially Dance courses for Extended Schools and School Sports Partnerships.

Hertfordshire Catering
· Regular meetings to discuss work and keep updated.
· School Food Trust (SFT) initiatives and support for schools in meeting the guidance.
· Members of the County Wide Schools Food Group.
· Members of the Healthy Schools Quality Assurance Group (QUAG).
Obesity
· Close links with PCT staff - health promotion, weighing and measuring staff, school nurses and dieticians.
· Close links with the Weighing and Measuring Programme. Measuring of 5 and 11 year olds. This data is used to target future work.
· Members of the County Wide Schools Food Group.
· Members of the Healthy Schools QUAG.
· Joint attendance at Eastern Region project on the impact of obesity on local authorities and the PCT. Leading to some joint work focusing on Broxbourne.
