Day 1 – St. Helens, Oregon 69 miles

Fun Facts about St. Helens:

St. Helens was established as a river port on the Columbia River in the mid-1840’s. The town is named for its view of Mt. St. Helens, located 30 miles away in the Cascade Mountain Range.

Originally settled by loggers, St. Helen’s basalt rock quarry was also a major industry in the early 1900s. The town’s major employers today still include forest products and mining.

Near the riverfront, the Olde Towne portion of St. Helens features a Nationally Registered Historic District encompassing 10 blocks, which includes residences and civic buildings dating back nearly a century. Because of its picturesque setting, St. Helens has been a location for many films, including Halloweentown and Twilight.

Throughout the summer months, the Columbia View Amphitheater in the town’s Historic District becomes the living room of the community every Thursday evening. Families and friends gather to enjoy a variety of music with the beautiful Columbia River as a backdrop and an Open Air Market that offers options for a picnic dinner.
