Saints' Alive!
June7, 2012 ALL SAINTS’ CHURCH Volume 93, Issue 6
"Preach the gospel at all times. Use words if necessary." That quote is allegedly from St. Francis of Assisi – although there is no proof of that. However, I have heard people repeat this many times.
Can we preach the gospel with good deeds only? It is certainly true that “we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” (Ephesians 2:10) (ESV)
In Paul’s letter to Titus, which is only 3 chapters long, the importance of works is clearly stressed, as in 2.7, “Show yourself in all respects to be a model of good works, and in your teaching show integrity, dignity” At the same time, he says in 3.5 “he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit,”
So, can the gospel be preached by good works only?
Duane Liftin (former WheatonCollege president) is very helpful. He says, “However important our actions may be (and they are very important indeed), and whatever else they may be doing (they serve a range of crucial functions), they are not “preaching the gospel.” The gospel is inherently verbal, and preaching it is inherently verbal behavior. If the gospel is to be communicated at all, it must be put into words.”
Have you ever tried to watch the TV with the sound off? Maybe so if you watch a lot of sports and tire of the announcers droning on. But that is not so for, say, Masterpiece Theater.
Liftin points out that non-verbal communication, while being an effective way of communicating attitudes, moods, feelings and relationships are simply inadequate for conveying cognitive content.
Further, non-verbal communication is often ambiguous. I remember a Bronx policeman waving his hands at me, but it wasn’t clear to me what he intended. Apparently, he wanted me to stop. Finally, I did and he came over and said to me, ‘what’s wrong with yinz, can’t yinz read?’ Non-verbal communication has limits.
Liftin concludes: “The gospel of Jesus Christ is a verbal thing, and communicating it requires putting it into words. This verbal witness is scarcely the whole of our calling, but neither is it dispensable. Nothing can replace it.”
