Prize Winning Foundation in memory of the Metropolitan Moskovsky and Kolomensky Makarii (Bulgakov),

an outstanding hierarch of the Russian Orthodox Church, historian, theologian and author of the multi-volume "History of the Russian Church"

is ready to announce

the beginning of registration to participate in the competition for the best research work of 2004-2005 on the history of the Orthodox church, Russian and Moscow history, the history of the Orthodox countries and nations

The Founders: Moscow Patriarchate, the Government of Moscow, the Russian Academy of Sciences.

Terms of the Competition

To participate in Makarievsky Competition competitors must provide for research works and publications of newly discovered historical sources, published during 2000-2004 or type-written (also printed ) on four nominations:

1.The History of the Orthodox Church- namely the story of the Church itself; famous Church figures; hagiography; Church archeology; the history of the Church Art, the history of the written word, Church singing, liturgy, Church law; the history of Interchurch relations.

2.The History of Russia- the history of Old Russia and Russian principalities in XII — XIV; Russian state system; military and diplomatic affairs of Russia; the history of Russian enterprise; Russian-Slavonic relations; spiritual culture of the Slavonic peoples of Russia; Russian State Leaders.

3.The History of Moscow- its role in the Russian history; the story of the city, streets, buildings and monuments; biographies of famous city figures; the history of Moscow studies.

4.The History of the Orthodox countries and nations - The history of the country, spiritual and cultural traditions, researchexperience of Christian historic heritage, the history of Interchurch relations, famous Church persons.

All research papers must be written in Russian, bound and presented in 2 identical copies. Collectively written compositions are not accepted. Only living or overseas authors are admitted to seek nominations.

Recommendations are binding upon all participants.

Endowed with the right to promote research papers are: Academic and Scientific Councils of the Russian Academy Institutions, academicians and corresponding members of the Russian Academy of Sciences along their specialty; Scientific Councils of Research Institutes and Institutions of Higher Education; Scientific Councils of Museums, Arcllives and Libraries; the Government of Moscow in the face of the Premier and his deputies; Departments and Committees' leaders; the Educational Committee of Moscow Patriarchate; the Church Scientific Center "Pravoslavnaya Encyclopedia"; the eparchies of the Russian Orthodox Church presented by bishops in power and Heads of other Orthodox Churches, laureates of the Makarievsky Prize on their nominations.

According to the Committee's decision, the best compositions will win diplomas, medals, 3-level money rewards.

Papers for nominations are accepted beginningFebruary 1, 2004 to February 1, 2005.
