Topic 1: What are the advantages and disadvantages of teaching students in their primarylanguage? Should English language learning instruction serve to replace native language?
Teaching students in their primary language has the benefitof helping the child to feelmore comfortable, especially when learning difficult content when the content is hard enough, the teacher does not want the student struggling with the meaning of words as well. There is aloss of comprehension when words must be read and translated one at a time rather thangrouped for content comprehension. In addition, teaching achild in their primary language allows the student to place the content within the social, political and ideological nuances of theprimary language. According to Marlow and Canestrari,(2006) another advantage is that thestudent can only develop their own voice through their primary language in a “prerequisite to thedevelopment of a positive sense of self-worth” (p. 156).
In addition, students learn to read muchfaster and with more comprehension in their primary language.Disadvantages are the loss of the more formal languagelearning process in higher levelthinking classes such as the sciences. It is also a created boundary between native speakers andthose who are speaking a different language in the sameeducational setting.
English language learning should be done separately from the core classes and not beused to replace native language. Children are amazingly adaptable. If they are learning English inan ELL class, they will bring it over into the otherclasses. It is not a question of replacing thenative language, but rather a chance to be a bilingual speaker.
