Preparing for Section A in Paper 1 and Paper 2

Remind yourself of the format of the two exams and the questions at
Find a newspaper. Read the front page story. Summarise the main points of the story in one paragraph
Repeat the above with a magazine article, an article from the Sunday broadsheet newspapers, the first page of an autobiography or biography, and any other non-fiction text.
Revise the terms explicit and implicit. What’s the difference?
Find out what literary fiction is on p17 of your revision guide and what literary non-fiction is on p18
Make notes on audience and purpose from . Understanding these things will help you analyse writers’ methods.
Revise language techniques on p30-37 of your revision guide and then complete practice questions p38-40. Don’t just read them though – make revision cards or mind maps of the key concepts.
Revise structural techniques on p41-45 of your revision guide and then complete practice questions p46-48. Don’t just read them though – make revision cards or mind maps to help you remember them.

Make a revision card for each of the questions – include key tips and hints.
Pick up any fiction book at home, or in the library. Read the first page and ask yourself ‘is this engaging? Does it make me want to read on’? Whatever the answer, try to find evidence from the text which has made you feel that way.
Complete a practice exam paper on p154-162 of your revision guide. Hand to your English teacher for feedback.

Complete these activities as part of your English revision schedule. You should repeat some of the tasks more than once and date them when finished. Practise what you’ve revised by completing past exam questions. Pass these to your teacher for feedback.

Revise your writing skills (SPAG) at
Make notes on writing for audience and purpose on p50-53 of your revision guide.
Revise how to write good descriptions on p57 and then have a go at the tasks on p58-59 (Paper 1). Pass to your English teacher for feedback. Exam Tip – choose the descriptive writing task rather than the story as it’s easier to hit the Assessment Objectives.
Learn 10 powerful words for description (for example: mesmerising, paucity, iridescent, grandeur, recumbent, effervescent, electrifying, immense, capacious, kaleidoscope).
Read p60-67 of your revision guide and make notes on the different forms of writing (Paper 2). Aim for a revision card or mind map for each form – newspapers, leaflets, travel, speeches, reports, reviews, letters.
Push yourself and your punctuation. Learn how to use more sophisticated punctuation such as semi-colons and colons. Don’t forget to revise apostrophes.
Learn 10 powerful words for arguing your point of view (for example negative words: detrimental, incredulous, deficient, putrid, obnoxious, inferior. Positive words: exceptional, unprecedented, phenomenal, prodigious, magnificent).
Practise varying your sentences. Write a simple sentence followed by a complex one. Then try to write an embedded clause.
