Social Work Hall of Distinction
Honoring California’s Social Work Leadersand Innovators
The California Social Work Hall of Distinction committee invites you to submit a nomination to recognize an individual whose body of work over their social work careermade outstanding contributions to the advancement of the social work profession and/or social work practice in California and bettered the lives of Californians. Those who would receive such recognition are:
1) original founders of the profession by virtue of developing standards or programs
2) those who made an extraordinary contribution to professional development, and
3) those who by exemplary practice served as roles models for other social workers.
Fundamental expectations of all Hall of Distinction nominees are that they have earned a Master of Social Work and that they have demonstrated support of social work values and the NASW Code of Ethics.
NOMINATION PROCESS: Submission of the completed nomination form identifying the nominator(s) and their contact information, additional endorsers, and a narrative addressing the major contributions of the nominee. The submission should address one or more of the above items and the guidelines for selection listed below. Nominations are accepted at any time but must be submitted by January 15 to be considered for that year. It is helpful, if possible, to submit a biography and a digitized photo with the nomination form. Send all materials to:

GUIDELINES FOR SELECTION: Selection will be based on evidence provided that the nominee has contributed to the social work profession in any of the following ways.
- Demonstration of exceptional leadership with respect to social work practice and education, research, or social policy in California.
- Risk-taking to achieve outstanding positive results in social policies or programs, particularly during controversial historical periods of the past.
- Leadership in advocacy against potentially harmful social policies on behalf of clients, whether adults, children, communities, and in extending social programs to previously underserved populations.
- Leadership in promoting social programs and/or policies in different fields of practice and/or in those major societal institutions which describe the role and contributions of social work: the family, education, health, housing, work, religion, recreation, government and justice.
- Extraordinary contributions to social work practice or application of techniques.
- Leadership and advocacy in initiating innovative research or programs with positive tangible results over a period of time.
The induction class will be announced in the spring. The Hall of Distinction Induction coincides each year with the NASW-CA Annual Conference, which alternates between northern and southern California venues. Honorees are selected from the corresponding geographic regions to facilitate the attendance of their invited guests. If a nominee is not selected for the current year’s induction class, the submitted materials are held over for review in future years when the induction is held in their region of the state (northern/southern). Nominators are notified of the committee’s decision and are invited to submit additions to the nomination packet in between selection cycles.
