4th grade Summer Reading

Fourth Grade Summer Reading

While curled up in a comfy chair, soaking up sun on a sandy beach, or on a hammock in the back yard, students can complete their required summer reading. We are challenging students to read at least 3 books this summer. You can challenge yourself and read 4 or try the star challenge and read 5! These books can be a variety of text including: chapter books, graphic novels, or informational books. Please have your child record the books that they have read on the attached reading log. You may want to sit with your child and create a summer reading book list!

Students will choose one of the books they have read to complete a book project in a bag that will be due the week of August 29th. This project will be completed at home and should be presentation ready on that day. Please see the directions below for this project and the back of this sheet for a reading log.

Book Report in a Bag!

  1. Students need a brown paper bag or any gift bag.
  2. Outside of the bag needs to include:
  • Decorate outside of the bag: include pictures and artwork relevant to the novel.
  • Include the title and author of the novel.
  1. Inside the bag:
  • 5 items (pictures or objects) that symbolize each of the following: characters, setting, events, the theme or lesson, and your favorite part of the story.
  1. Written Component:
  • 1 paragraph for each object/picture that explains why it symbolizes each of those parts of a story (characters, setting, events, the theme, favorite part).
  • Each paragraph should be at least 3-5 sentences long.
  • Neatly handwritten or typed.

Record the books you read below. You can add more spaces if you need them. Remember, you should read 3 books by the end of the summer. Got done early? Challenge yourself to read 4 books OR try the Star challenge and read 5 books! Need some inspiration? Here’s a few books you might like that I recommend for 3rd and 4th grade students:
