Module on Methodology of Social Work III: Prof.ssa Valentina Calcaterra

COURSE AIMS

This course explores the principles of network relational methodology in planning community-based, mutual help and participatory planning social work activities.

The course includes two practical workshops: one workshop to analyse the experiences of users and expert relatives, in line with networking best practices, and a workshop for the methodological reprocessing of social work experiences. Both workshops will focus particularly on developing the professional responsiveness specific to social work.

TEACHING METHOD

The course will be taught through lectures, analysis of social workers’ accounts, expert users and active citizens, and meetings for methodological appraisal.

ASSESSMENT METHOD

Exams will be either written or oral, depending on the number of students registered for each exam session. The exam will include the presentation of a short paper with students’ thoughts on experiences discussed in the practical workshops.

Module on Procedures and Techniques of Social Work III: Loris Benedetti

COURSE AIMS

The course is intended to develop and complete students’ basic knowledge of the working practices in use within organisations that manage social services for individuals, in relation to fulfilling the institutional functions of the social worker, and delivering the main categories of social welfare services.

COURSE CONTENT

The course is divided into 5 teaching units:

1.The third sector in the new welfare system

–What is meant by the Third Sector; the different types of institution and the regulations on how they function.

–Which procedures regulate the Public Institution – Third Sector relationship for managing social services (contract, accreditation…).

2.Mental Health

–The most significant stages in the history of psychiatry; the current system of mental health services.

–Welfare needs assessment for a person with mental health problems, and drawing up a personalised plan of intervention.

3.Addictions

–Some notes on terminology; changes to legislation; the public healthcare services framework.

–Procedures in use in the system of services to treat and rehabilitate drug addicts.

4.The social services in relation to the penal system

–The adult prison system, the services involved, alternative measures to prison. The tasks of the U.E.P.E. (Uffici di Esecuzione Penale Esterna), role and functions of the social worker.

–Italian Presidential Decree 448/1988 and penal intervention for juveniles: the parties involved in applying legislation and its relative functions; the stages of a trial; techniques and procedures for remedial work with young offenders.

5. The immigration question

–Legislative references; the possibilities for help; mediation and integration processes.

–The main procedures for “accompanying individuals from entry to possible citizenship”.

There will be a written exam with multiple choice and open questions. Assessment of this module with be an integral part of the assessment of the Methods and Techniques of the Social Services III course.
