Dear Members,
I hope this newsletter finds you doing well and that you enjoyed our January speaker as much as I did. I thought it was a great opportunity to stop and think “big picture strategy” for a minute. Mr. Pannell’s definition of business analytics resonated with me. Also, I enjoyed his philosophy that the new process improvement trends in business are sometimes the same idea with a new name. I believe the most important element that he discussed was the simple
reminder that all good business analytics are done with facts. “Facts and data will set you free” is a quote from a fearless leader I know, and one that proves beneficial when applied.
Fact is – I’m very excited about the events lined up for the rest of our program year. Our Program chairs have lined up Dr. Kurt Weiss from n-Act Management Consulting, LLC to speak on the “Myths of Multitasking” February 3rd; John Christian from Energy Solutions to speak on the lessons learned from the fatality in Erwin March 4th; and Todd Overman from Bass, Berry & Sims PLC to speak on
“Negotiating Contentious Flowdowns” May 6th. Our NES chairs and speakers are working diligently to bring you a valuable training on April 1st. We are going to change things up in June and have a recognition lunch – more details to come.
Unfortunately I will be in D.C. during our February member meeting so I hope to hear your feedback when I return.

Dr. Kurt K. Weiss

Dr. Weiss founded n-ACT Management Consulting, a company that produces results that n-ergize. I design, deliver and implement client solutions for management training and development focusing at all levels from executive and senior management to workplace teams.
With more than 20 years experience as a training and organizational/management consultant, I have worked with thousands of individuals and teams from over 500 international organizations to develop their personal and professional effectiveness in management, change management, leadership, teams, communication, and interpersonal skills.
I work with clients using a variety of approaches from: one-on-one, teams, in training courses, as wells as organization-wide interventions using:
· Assessments – MBTI, FIRO-B, DiSC,
· Situational Leadership I and II, Platinum Rule, and the Wilson Social Styles Inventory
· Coaching
· Training and Development – courses in
· mindful leadership, managing people, change management, executive effectiveness, communication skills, team building, and
supervisory skills (that include games and simulations)
One of my specialties is executive coaching and development, and I work with CEO’s, presidents, and senior vice presidents and their teams.
My career began as an information technology manager for the State of Tennessee. My responsibilities included database computer programming, software instruction, creating software solutions to solve client problems. While completing my doctorate, I was a faculty member at the University of Tennessee teaching Human Resource Development undergraduate and graduate level courses.
During my doctoral program at the Corporate Learning Institute of Vanderbilt University, I discovered and was able to develop a philosophy and approach to adult learning. I believe that discovery-based learning is a philosophy that offers individuals the opportunity to construct their own meaning in learning situations.
I design learning environments that combine the
discovery-based learning philosophy with accelerated adult learning techniques. This results in an active and participant-driven learning approach that engages people at both the head and the heart level. Participants learn how to create and value their own meaning and see the results of their decision making processes. As a result, participants can discover and experience their own “Aha!” moments. My current focus in coaching and training is on how to become a “The Mindful Leader.”
My work in 38 countries includes developing multi-cultural expertise in the Europe, North and South America, Africa, and the Middle East.
I worked in the U.S. with such international organizations as the U.S. Department of Energy, Glaxo-Smith Kline, Boeing, United Space Alliance (Space Shuttle Operations for NASA), Schlumberger, General Cologne Re, Pfizer Pharmaceuticals, Lucent Technologies, NCR, Saturn Car Corporation, IBM, BellSouth, Medtronic, Covenant Health Systems, and the Tennessee Valley Authority.
Some of my international oil and gas industry work includes: Schlumberger (where I have developed over 7,000 managers), RockPile Energy, MicroSeismic, Kuwait Petroleum Companies, Saudi Methanol in Saudi Arabia, Saudi Arabian Texaco in Kuwait, Abu Dhabi Marine Operating Company in the United Arab Emirates.

A contract can be only as strong and as successful as its administration. In this highly practical course, you’ll address all aspects of effective contract
administration — from initial award to final closeout. Special emphasis will be given to successful
administration of contracts: problem avoidance,
day-to-day operating practices, performance
monitoring systems, early detection and correction of nonperformance, payment, contract modifications and working relationships.
You’ll learn proven practices for getting contracts off to a solid start, keeping them on track and handling every problem that arises. To obtain maximum benefit from the course, you should have a basic knowledge of the procurement process.

PCA Specialist (Systems)
PURPOSE: Perform a variety of complex analytical and support functions for all PCA applications requiring skills in database coding, maintenance and management, and other information systems knowledge. Serve as functional and technical lead for software implementations and support all PCA applications. Perform bi-annual audits of the ORAU Purchase Card program to ensure compliance with ORAU, Department of Energy (DOE), and federal orders, policies and procedures.

About the Program
“Subcontract Management from A to Z” is a one day National Education Seminar (NES) that presents
subcontract management in the U.S. federal
government environment. Subcontract management under a government prime contract is hybrid between the company’s commercial subcontracting
requirements and the federal government’s subcontracting requirements. This seminar is unique in its focus on the topics that make subcontract
management different under a prime government contract.
