Hello all,
The ANA’s National Coin Week is starting early this year, and will feature two activities. First, each week through April 19, during Coin Week itself, the ANA will be releasing clues for a numismatic treasure hunt. You can find them at their website www.money.org, or register there to have them sent by e-mail. Those who successfully complete the treasure hunt will be entered into a drawing for several prizes, including gold!
In addition to the treasure hunt, the ANA is also challenging clubs to a trivia contest. Hopefully by the second meeting this month we’ll have the materials to take up the challenge. They describe the test as “TOUGH”, but I think we’re up to it (Hopefully Terry Woodward will drop by sometime).
To help prepare for these you might want to take advantage of the Club Library. Just peruse the library list on our website and contact Juan Albara for your numismatic reading needs. Every collector has a few puzzling ‘weird’ items languishing unidentified and unattributed among their carefully organized Whitman albums. The library could have what you’re looking for. Even if you don’t have anything peculiar to look up, the library provides an excellent opportunity to explore new areas of the hobby. You’d be surprised what kind of cool and interesting things exist in quieter parts of the hobby (have you seen modern African paper money?). That’s what I like best about this hobby; there’s always more to learn!
It looks like you all were eager to dive back into numismatics after the break. Both meetings in January were very well attended. The juniors were especially active, working on their numismatic scrap books. This year is definitely off to a good start.
- Aaron Brown

Junior Challenge Question
(Question provided by Marcia Soria)
Question: What do thefollowing have in common - Legend, Motto, Denomination, Beaded, Serrated, Lettered and Gripped Edge?
Answer to February Junior Challenge Question: 1. Remember cleaning coins reduces their value. 2. If you must remove dirt, use mild soap and water and pat dry with a soft towel.Do not brush or rub it. 3. Hold a coin by the edges, between thumb and forefinger - this protects the coins surface from fingerprints and your natural oils. 4. Wear soft cotton gloves when handling uncirculated or proof coins. If you do not wear gloves make sure your hands are clean. 5. Hold coins over a soft towel or other soft surface in case you drop them. 6.Do not talk directly over your coins because tiny droplets of saliva can drop onto the coin or show up later as spots. Like fingerprints they are difficult to remove.
Membership Challenge Question
(Question provided by Mike Tandy)
Question: What were the first coins struck at the New Orleans Mint?
Answer to February General Membership Question: 1848 Gold Quarter Eagle (CAL.)
