FIELD TRIP TO THE MUSEUM OF TOLERANCE

(YOU MUST TURN IN YOUR WAIVER OF LIABILITY FORM BEFORE YOU GO).
Field trip to the Museum of Tolerance located at 9786 West Pico Blvd., Los Angeles. (Note: This is an independent field trip. You must be able to transport yourself to the museum and plan to make your trip well before your paper is due to make sure that you can attend when you want to.) Be sure to take your Ventura College ID card (student discount). Note: please check with the Museum prior to going, to check the accuracy of this information regarding parking, etc. Also be aware that they close certain days due to special events and/or holidays.
1. Go to the Museum. Try to spend at least one hour beyond the 2 ½ hours required by the tour. If you car pool with someone else, try to spend most of the time there reflecting alone and keep notes about your feelings during this experience. (If you are with others this is hard to do and your conversations will restrict your individual experience).
2. Make notes as soon as possible. (Bring a notebook) When you can, make notes to yourself to help you remember things for your write up. You may want to write your paper right away so that your reflections are "fresh"; if you do go back later to re-examine your thoughts, notice how "raw" your observations are immediately after vs. a few weeks later. Talk about this effect in your paper.
3. Write up your experiences in an informal paper. This is a personal account of the day. What were your thoughts and feelings during the tour and after? What did you get out of the experience? What will you change to increase tolerance in your life? (BE SPECIFIC) Make sure to include the information described in point #4. A very brief discussion of the exhibit which had the most impact on you and why.
IMPORTANT: Maximum 1 page, double spaced and typed.
MAKE SURE TO INCLUDE YOUR REACTIONS TO THE MUSEUM'S SPEAKER.
4. Brief interview. Make sure to interview someone who has either been a victim of a hate crime/prejudice or someone who has been the perpetrator of a hate crime/prejudice. Include a brief summary of the conversation, impressions, and comments about the interview. You may also listen to the guest speakers at the museum; this is an acceptable alternative. (Most students have stated that listening to the survivors was the highlight of their visit.)
Make sure to include the following information:
1. Your name
2. What class you are enrolled in.
3. Time it meets.
4. Do not use any folders of any kind - just make sure everything is properly stapled together.
Important: INCLUDE IN YOUR PAPER THE ORIGNAL SIGNED PROJECT PROPOSAL
AND A COPY OF THE BIOGRPAHY and/OR RECEIPT
