REVIEW: SKILLS FOR DEVELOPING GOOD EMOTIONAL HEALTH (FROM PREVIOUS WORKSHEET THAT ALL STUDENTS SHOULD HAVE IN BINDERS)
SURVEY: HOW CAN SETTING GOALS AND ACHIEVING THEM HELP IMPROVE YOUR EMOTIONAL HEALTH?
EXPLAIN: LEARNING HOW TO SET REALISTIC SHORT-TERM AND LONG-TERM GOALS IS A VERY IMPORTANT STRATEGY IN DEVELOPING GOOD EMOTIONAL HEALTH. THERE ARE SOME STEPS TO FOLLLOW TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN SETTING AND ACHIEVING A GOAL (REVIEW STEPS TO ACHIEVING AN EMOTIONAL HEALTH GOAL WORK-SHEET)
Activity #1 (7-10 min) ACHIEVING GOOD EMOTIONAL HEALTH WORK-SHEET
REVIEW THE STEPS TO ACHIEVING EMOTIONAL HEALTH GOALS
  1. Identify an emotional health characteristic you’d like to strengthen.
Example: Building a better relationship with your mother
  1. Write a specific, measureable goal to help strengthen this characteristic.
Example: By the end of the month, I will have a positive conversation with my mom at least 15 minutes each day.
  1. Identify steps to accomplish your goal
Example: Identify 3 things each day I want to talk to my mom about, find a time to talk each day, prepare by planning what to share and what to ask
  1. Create a timeline to accomplish your goal
Example: Week 1- write topics to discuss, week 2- talk 5 minutes a day to mom, week 3- talk 10 minutes a day to mom, week 4- talk 15 minutes a day to mom
  1. Who can help you achieve your goal?
Example: Ask your friends what they talk to their moms about. Ask your teacher for advice about how to approach your mom. Ask a sibling for help.
  1. Evaluate your progress toward your goal
Example: Did you take time to think about what you wanted to talk about? Was your goal realistic? How were conversations with mom? What can be done to improve them? How has your emotional health improved as a result of working toward this goal?
COMPLETE & SHARE (7-12 min): Direct students to the work-sheet, ask them to think about the one emotional health characteristic they most want to improve & complete the work-sheet accordingly.
Allow students to share their plans with a partner.
Activity #2 STUDENT’S CHOICE (OR TEACHER CAN ASSIGN TO EACH STUDENT DEPENDING ON SKILL LEVELS)
Teacher will allow each student to choose their final project for the unit from the following:
-HEALTH ACTIONS PAMPHLET- Students show advocacy skills and mastery of information by developing a pamphlet to deliver health messages to others
-A PLAN FOR TEACHING EMOTIONAL HEALTH TO OTHERS- students demonstrate mastery of knowledge, beliefs and skills by creating a plan to teach emotional health concepts to others
-HEALTH ADVOCAY LETTER- students’ beliefs and attitudes, and their communication and advocacy skills are show by writing a letter
TEACHER WILL HAND OUT EACH PROJECT AND STUDENTS WILL BEGIN WORKING ON EACH INDIVIDUAL PROJECT.
