COURSE DESCRIPTION:
The aim of this course is to improve your reading, writing and grammar skills in English. You will learn to read and write sentences in the present, past, future, present perfect and past perfect tenses. You will learn to recognize the differences between the simple and continuous tenses and to write negative and interrogative (question) sentences. You will learn to use adjectives, adverbs, gerunds, infinitives and modals correctly, and you will learn basic spelling rules and basic rules for punctuation. You will distinguish between main ideas and supporting details. You will write original focused paragraphs with topic sentences, relevant supporting detail and transition words. You will also increase your vocabulary through use of context clues as well as knowledge of word parts. In addition to this, you will read a variety of diverse texts and learn how to critically analyze works of literature that deepen your understanding of the material.

GRADING POLICY
Students and parents/guardians may view grades on the Denton ISD’s online gradebook site. (Recognize, however, that your essays and multi-paragraph writings will not be graded the day they are turned in; grading writing is a time-consuming process.)
Minor Summative: Quizzes ,Rough Drafts, short writing, ___40_%
Major Summative: Exams/Tests, Projects, Final Drafts Research papers _60___%
Retesting policy: All students will be given the opportunity to retest provided they meet the following requirement:
Ø Students must attend tutorials for reteaching/assistance in order to understand concepts missed on the first assessment.
Homework: Homework assignments will be regular and will involve reading, annotating, or otherwise responding to reading; working to acquire vocabulary; writing, revising, and editing compositions. Because of the pace at which we will work, minor assignments must be completed for the next class session unless otherwise specified, or learning will be lost. The purpose of assignments is to continue, reinforce, or assess learning. Grades will not be assessed on every bit of work done. Additionally, the instructor will determine which assignments will be graded for content and/or completion, often without prior notice to the students, so please be sure you complete each assignment.
Late Work and Zeros: All assignments should be turned in by deadlines set by the instructor. Failure to complete work will result in mandatory tutorials in order to ensure students do not miss out on learning.
METHODS OF ASSESSMENT
Classroom assessment methods in English II will cover a range of assessment methodologies, including selected response, constructed response, and performance–based assessments such as performance tasks, portfolios, teacher observations and conferences which will be evaluated using criterion rubrics in knowledge, concepts, skills and organization/presentation.
