SOCCER STUDY GUIDE

HISTORY

-Soccer originated in England in the 13th century.

-The first official rules were developed in 1871.

-At first the game of soccer was called football.

TERMINOLOGY

-Defense-the team that is trying to gain possession of the ball.

-Offense- the team that has possession of the ball and is attacking.

-Tackling-when a player is attempting to gain possession of the ball.

-Dribbling- when a player moves the ball down the field by making a

series of short taps with their feet.

-Throw-in-when the ball goes out of the boundary lines, the team

that did not kick the ball out is awarded the throw-in.

-Kick off-the skill used to start a game.

-Players-11 players from one team can be on the field at the same

time.

-Goalkeeper-the last line of defense and the only player allowed to

use their hands in a soccer game.

-Trapping-diffrent ways to stop and control the soccer ball.

-inside of the foot trap -chest trap

-inside of the leg trap

-Passing-a way to move the soccer ball down field to a teammate.

The best way to pass is to kick the soccer ball slightly

in front of the player. Inside of the foot pass, outside

of the foot pass, instep pass, heel pass. -Heading-when a player uses their head to deflect a fly ball.

-Field-for junior high school the dimensions of a soccer field is 55

yards by 100 yards.

-Goal Area-the small rectangles marked off in front of the goal.

-Penalty Area-the larger rectangles marked off on the field in front

of the goal.

-Corner Kick-a corner kick is taken when a defensive player sends

the ball over the end line.

-Free Kick-free kicks are awarded when fouls are committed.

-Goals-a goal is scored when the soccer ball crosses the goal line.

A goal may not be scored directly from a kick off.
