Romeo and Juliet Act 3 Discussion Questions
Answer each question in complete sentences.
1. According to Mercutio, who is to blame for his death? According to you, the reader, what is the true cause of Mercutio’s death? How do you interpret the fight scene? How much blame do you place on Tybalt? How much on Romeo?
2. Discuss the Prince’s mercy. Why do you believe that he changes his mind about the punishment that will be handed down to Romeo? Do you believe he has made a fair and just decision? Why or why not?
3. Discuss how Romeo and Juliet both react differently to the same situation of Romeo’s impending banishment. Do you find one individual to be more rational than the other? Why? Provide at least one example from the text to support.
4. Hyperbole: is an extreme exaggeration. For example, in Act III, Scene III, Romeo states, “There is no world without Verona walls” (3.3.17). Explain how this is a hyperbole. Find one other example of hyperbole from Act III and explain its significance.
5. Discuss the theme of light vs. darkness as it applies to Act III, Scene IV and the conversation between Romeo and Juliet. How is it different than other descriptions pertaining to light and dark that we have seen up to this point in the play? What images are used to explain light and darkness in this scene?
6. In Act I we discussed the interaction between parents and children in the play. Has your opinion changed on this topic? How is Lord Capulet’s behavior different in Act III than it was in Act I (especially as it pertains to Paris and Juliet). Do you feel differently about him as a character? Provide at least one example from the text to support your opinion of Lord Capulet.
