Technical Theatre – Lighting Design Project

YOUR MISSION: In groups of four, you will select a song (at least 2:00 in length) and design a minimum of 4 light cues (imagine lighting for a dance number). You will program your cues into the board, record them, create a light cue sheet, and present the project to the rest of the class. You must also come up with a statement (1 paragraph) about the theme of the song and how your lighting design supports this theme.

You will be graded on the following:

Criteria / Points Possible / Points Earned
Group uses class time efficiently and is able to complete planning sheet and cue programming during allotted class time. / 10
Cues are recorded properly, as evidenced by a smooth presentation. / 10
Light cue sheet is complete, clear, and professionally presented. / 10
Statement is typed, 12 point font, appropriate spelling and grammar. Clearly identifies the theme of the song and explains how the design supports the theme. / 10
Presentation is professional. Students speak loudly and clearly when introducing the song, and are silent during presentation, displaying appropriate technician etiquette. / 10
TOTAL / 50

You will have a total of 45 minutes to use the light board. This means that your planning and preparation need to be completed before you sit down to program your cues so that you may work quickly and efficiently.

On the day of your presentation, you will turn in your rubric, light cue sheet, and your typed statement of theme. Following the presentation, each student will individually write a reflection answering the following questions in complete sentences (5 points each for thorough answer and appropriate spelling and grammar):

  1. What went well?
  2. What challenges did you face?
  3. What did you learn that you can apply in the future?
