Conference times (by appt. only)

Rules/Consequences:

Rules

  1. Follow directions the first time they are given.
  2. Come preparedto class daily (bring all supplies, homework, and be in proper uniform).
  3. No teasing, name-calling, or use of inappropriate language.
  4. Treat everyone withrespect.
  5. Take responsibility for your choices and actions.

Possible Consequences

  • Behavior note (after verbal warning)/Conference with the student
  • Conference with student and parents/guardians
  • Detention/Meeting with the Principal or Vice Principal

Discipline System:

Students will be expected to follow all class rules as well as school rules. If a student is not behaving appropriately in class and has already been given a verbal warning, a “Behavior Note” will be issued and the child will have a conference with the teacher. This note must come back the next day, signed by a parent/guardian. After the Behavior Note, if the behavior is not corrected, the parents will be called in to meet with the teacher and student. If the inappropriate behavior continues, the student will be sent to the Principal or Vice Principal to serve a detention and parents will be notified again.

Behavior notices, behavior conferences between students/teachers or parents/students/teachers, and detentions will be documented. These all negatively affect the Behavior Grade on the report card for that specific trimester.

Homework:

How/When?

Students are expected to be responsible for copying down their homework from the school website. If there is homework given in a particular subject, it will be posted on the 5th grade homepage of the school siteby the end of the school day. Homework WILL NOT be assigned on a daily basis. It will take no more than an average of 30 minutes to complete, and will usually involve watching a video of a lesson that will be in use the following day, or doing background research for an activity/assignment we will be working on in class. Students will use iPads during homework.

Late/Missing

Not turning in homework will affect the grade in the subject in which the homework is missing, as well as the “work habits” grade on the report card. Once missing homework is turned in, it will be counted as late. Late work will lose 2 points for each late assignment, unless I have discussed the situation with parents beforehand, and only in extreme circumstances.

Students who do not turn in homework, or have incomplete or messy homework, will be given a note to take home. This note must be signed by a parent and brought back the next day, accompanied by the completed, neat work. Messy work that is being redone will not count as late work. Incomplete assignments will count as late, therefore subject to same grade penalty as late work.

Absent

If a student is absent, they are given two days to make up missing work, unless the absence was for an extended period of time. This make up work will receive full credit, unless the student fails to turn in the work by the second day after the absence.

  • Each child will also be required to read one A.R. (Accelerated Reader) book per trimester and take a reading test on that book in the library. At the end of each trimester, the A.R. test will be counted as a reading quiz grade. The book read/tested on must be in the student’s reading range or higher. The books that I have the students read in class DO NOT COUNT as this A.R. requirement, although they have to test on those books as well.
  • Accelerated Math is also a requirement for 5th grade students this year. The students can access the work online through the Accelerated Math website. All students will be given a username and password in order to access this site at any time. Each trimester, students must COMPLETE 15 objectives. I will show them what that means and how to complete objectives online. Each completed objective will earn 2 points as a quiz grade, totaling 30 points (AR quiz grade) at the end of the trimester.
