·  By the end of the call, I believe there was a consensus that for firm pieces to work with BPM mailings, the best preparation is as a “machinable parcel.”

·  The sortation for machinable parcels on pallets is in M045.3.5. Sortation for machinable parcels in sacks is in M722.5 for Presorted BPM, and M723.5 for Carrier Route BPM.

·  Firm pieces sorted to BMC pallets and sacks must meet the additional standards in C010.8 and M020.1.5b for machinability on BMC parcel sorting machines (PSMs). Such pieces bearing a barcode in accordance with C850, would also be entitled to the $.03 parcel barcode discount. Firm pieces sorted to 5-digit pallets and sacks would not be required to meet the same machinability standards for PSMs.

·  If firm pieces are prepared as part of a flat size (C050.3) or irregular parcel (weighing less than 10 pounds) mailing, firm pieces must be physically packaged with other addressed pieces (e.g., other firm pieces and other single or non-firm pieces) to the same logical presort destination using the standards in M020.1.6 and M045.2.5, as appropriate. Individual firm pieces not physically packaged with other pieces to the same logical presort destination (the total group of pieces for a presort destination) are not permitted on pallets or in sacks when prepared as flat-size or irregular parcel mailings. Whenever possible, firm pieces must be placed on the bottom of each physical package, prepared for each destination. In addition to the package labeling standards in M020.1.3 (pressure sensitive labels or optional endorsement lines), firm pieces should also bear a facing slip containing instructions such as “DO NOT OPEN, ALL FOR ADDRESS ON TOP PIECE,” to assure the piece arrives intact

·  If a logical package consists only of firm pieces (2 or more), an additional facing slip or label must used to identify the logical package destination (e.g., 5-digit, 3-digit, ADC). Facing slips must contain the same 3-line information as for a corresponding sack label.

·  Line 1: Destination city, SCF, ADC, and ZIP Code, as appropriate.

·  Line 2: Content [PSVC FLATS or FLTS, or PSVC IRREG]

·  Line 3: City and two-letter state abbreviation of origin post office.
