Aims The aims of this module are to understand evidence based practice, assist the rationalisation of prescribing by GPs, make reasoned judgements on drug therapy and apply the concepts of clinical audit in the community pharmacy and primary health care settings.
Learning outcomes On completion of this module the student should be able to:
• use provided PACT data to aid the rationalisation of prescribing by GPs.
• describe the influence of formularies on prescribing.
• critically discuss and evaluate clinical trial data and meta-analysis.
• undertake a drug utilisation review.
• make reasoned judgements on drug therapy in the light of published studies and procedures.
• define commonly used pharmacoeconomic terminology.
• apply the principles of audit in the community pharmacy and primary health care settings.
• apply appropriate methodology for successful monitoring and evaluation of drug usage and therapeutic outcomes.
Content This module comprises a total of 200 hours of student effort, including time spent on assignments.

strategies The content of this module will be delivered by way of distance learning material (90 hours) and supported by guided study (95 hours) and a residential weekend (15 hours).
Learning support Distance learning material and accompanying textbooks, published reader material and reader material prepared in-house. Peer review and support through learning sets.
Assessment (examples) Evaluate current drug literature/trial material using the current topical methods of evaluation.
Audit of local repeat prescribing.
Analysis of local PACT data.
