SMALL BUSINESS CENTER DIRECTOR
JOB DESCRIPTION
The Brooklyn College Small Business Center will provide a comprehensive range of small business based assistance including: one to one client counseling in the area of business plan development; analysis and preparation of financial documents, such
as cash flow projections, income statements and sources and uses statements; advice and instruction in the use of automated and manual record keeping systems; and guidance for clients with market related concerns, such as advertising, promotional functions and
market surveys.
Day to day management of the Small Business Center requires a comprehensive knowledge of business operations and practices and the capacity to optimize the utilization of staff and interns for the purposes of counseling and training clients who are presently or prospectively engaged in small business enterprise. Sufficient
organizational and management skills are critical in maintaining a high level of activity while adapting to the time sensitive nature of business decision making. Program promotion requires excellent communicative skills and the ability to interact with audiences of varied knowledge and expertise. The director must have the range of
skills to represent the program and sponsors in settings that require professional presentations and media skills. Fund-raising to operate and sustain the Center will also be part of the director’s responsibilities.
Experience:
The position requires no less than five years experience in private sector business including 2 years in a managerial capacity. Relevant consulting experience may be substituted for management experience, however at least one year of private sector business management is desired.
Education:
The position requires a Bachelors Degree with a Masters Degree preferred. The degree must be in the area of public administration, management, finance or business related field.
Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
? Supervise all staff functions including assigning appropriate tasks, conduct staff meetings, identify staff training activities and insure the general quality and timeliness of staff activities by reviewing individual casework and feedback from clients.
? Provide quality one to one advisement, both long-term and short-term, to a diverse and complex range of clientele with varying levels of expertise or the sophistication of the venture.
? Implement and/or participate in training sessions, which can include long term classroom situations, single and multi day conferences, and provide follow up service as necessary to attendees.
? Give lectures, lead workshops, and sponsor or co-sponsor training events, seminars and conferences in conjunction with site visits to businesses, and presentations.
? Develop and maintain a website for the center; create printed material for distribution to supplement electronic communications as needed.
? Maintain a client counseling caseload and provide support and assistance to staff in their counseling needs.
? Act as a clearinghouse of information for clients and refer, when necessary, those individuals to outside entities that can provide additional support services.
? Gather written feedback from assisted clients for program evaluation and service refinement as well as for promotional purposes.
? Establish a comprehensive and credible network of professional contacts for referral purposes, where new contacts are established on an on going basis so that resources can be utilized in response to an ever-changing business climate; maintain
relationships with the business community as well as other related public and private entities to promote program services and to elicit funding support to broaden and enhance outreach services.
? Coordinate student intern program including screening, selection and performance evaluations. Interface with campus sponsors. Directly supervise student assistants and instruct them by identifying tasks, editing reports and other written documents,
monitoring meetings, etc.
* Establish relationships with campus personnel, faculty, non-teaching staff and college support staff to enhance the quality, diversity and timeliness of program services; provide information for campus administration with respect to budget, expenditure plans, personnel administration, facility utilization, and develop and monitor internal fiscal control systems and financial reports.
Salary:
Part-time @ $42/hour
