Cause of Conflict

WORLD STUDIES II: World War I

Research and Persuasive Essay (CBA)

Historical Question: Understanding the causes of conflicts help us resolve conflicts or even prevent future ones from occurring. You will research a conflict and analyze its causes from different social science perspectives.

PROMPT:

[The History Association of Washington (HAW) is putting together an online exhibit about World War I and wants to identify in the exhibit the two major causes of WWI. They have asked us to give them our analyses of the causes of WWI, using the documents from the CBA. Write a letter to the HAW, convincing them to use the two causes you have identified as the most significant of WWI. Support your answers with evidence from the documents.]

An historical topic is significant or important when it:

·  Has an ECONOMIC (goods, trade, wealth, technology) impact on people

·  Re-arranges GEOGRAPHIC boundaries, travel, trade, or movement of people

Persuasive writing techniques

Firm position / Essay has a clear, strong position that is supported by everything in the essay. Having a firm position helps convince your reader that you are serious about the topic.
Preponderance of evidence / There are many ideas/arguments convincing the reader that the writer’s position is the best one. The more evidence you give, the more reasons you are giving your reader to agree with you.
Expert testimony / Experts in the field the essay deals with are quoted, and correctly cited. Your reader is likely to believe that your position is a good one if experts agree with it.
Concession/ Rebuttal / Strengthens own argument by showing reader you have already considered possible opposing arguments, and have found them to be weak/flawed/too insignificant to consider.
Call to action / Urges the reader to act with a clear statement, usually toward the end of the essay. Making clear exactly what you think your reader should do toward the end of the essay lets them finish their reading with a strong sense of purpose.

Organization for the Causes of WWI CBA Essay

The following is one way to organize your essay. You do not have to organize your essay exactly this way. (For example, you can blend your evidence/CD and analysis/CM.) You will need to include each of the components, but you may put them in whichever order you think works best.

Introduction / Hook—bring the reader into your essay
Thesis—state your position clearly
Road Map—let your reader know what your arguments will be

Anti-hook—let your reader gently back out of your essay

Instructions for the Concession/Rebuttal Paragraph

Possible body paragraph 2 topic sentences:

§  While some people may think that the main cause of World War I was X or Y, their arguments are flawed.

§  There are some who would argue that Z is not the largest cause of World War I, but their reasoning is not well thought out.

[You may use the above as “starters” for your topic sentence, but you must change the wording.]

Concession chunk for body paragraph 2:

1. Concession—a point another side could have regarding the main cause of WWI Use one of the first transitions to summarize the concession you are willing to make.

2. Rebuttal—evidence that you will use to show why this point should not/does not matter Use one of the second transitions to start off your CD.

3. Commentary/analysis—make it clear how this evidence you have given shows the other side is wrong—make it crystal clear! Use one of the third transitions to start off your CM.
