Environment-the living and nonliving things around you.
Ecosystem-the living and nonliving things that interact in an environment.
Population-a group of the same kind of plant or animal living in the same ecosystem.
Community-all the populations that live in one place.
Climate-the weather in a place, over a long period of time.
Biome-large natural areas (desert, tundra, oceans, etc.)
Adapt- to change, get used to; adjust.
Photosynthesis-the process by which a green plant uses sunlight to change water and carbon dioxide into food for itself. / Vocabulary- week of Sept. 5
Producer-a living thing that can make its own food.
Consumer- a living thing that can’t make its own food, and must eat other living things.
Herbivore- an animal that eats only plants, or producers.
Carnivore- an animal that eats only other animals.
Omnivore- an animal that eats both plants and other animals.
Decomposer- a living thing that feeds on the wastes of plants and animals.
Organism- a living thing.
Food chain- living things, in which each serves as food for the next. / Vocabulary- week of Sept. 12
Habitat- an environment that meets the needs of a living thing; where they live.
Niche- the role, or job of a living thing.
Prey- consumers that are eaten.
Predators- consumers that eat prey.
Biotic- living parts of an ecosystem.
Abiotic- nonliving parts of an ecosystem.
Basic needs- things that living things need to survive.
Interact- to have an effect on, or change one another. / Vocabulary- week of Sept. 19
Adaptation- a body part or a behavior that helps a living thing survive.
Camouflage- is a color or shape that helps an animal hide.
Instinct- a behavior that an animal is born with.
Hibernation- an inactive state.
Migration- movement of animals from one place to another and back.
Extinction- a kind of plant or animal has died out.
Endangered- threatened to become extinct.
Survival- continuing to live through dangerous conditions.

Vocabulary Homework

Choose which vocabulary activity you would like to complete each night!!

Activity 1 / Activity 2 / Activity 3
Create an illustration dictionary for your vocabulary words. Draw a picture and write the definition to represent (stand for) each vocabulary word. / Free Choice: Come up with your own idea!!
(Ex: create a comic strip with each word. Use each word in ONE of the strips. Create a story using each word (with the correct meaning. / Make a connection to specific life experiences for your vocabulary words. (Ex: My family helps take care of the environment by recycling.)

Createflash cards for each vocabulary word. Each flash card should include the vocabulary word on one side, and the definition on the other side. Use the flash cards to study for your test! / Write sentences using each vocabulary word. (Underline the word.) Each sentence should show comprehension of the vocabulary word. You must include each of the four types of sentences at least once. / Write your vocabulary words and their definition in a creative way. (Example: squiggly letters, bubble letters, different colored pencils…)
