Background:
BoysTown provides a wide range of programs for disadvantaged young people and their families. These programs are delivered in two service divisions: Counselling Services and Employment, Education & Training Services, supported by Corporate Services and Fundraising.
BoysTown’s mission is “To enable young people, especially those who are marginalised and without voice, to improve their quality of life.”

Purpose of the Position:
To provide counselling expertise within the organisational framework to clients of the Counselling Centre.
Responsibilities/Duties:
- To provide high quality counselling services in line with operational Counselling Centre
benchmarks and priorities:
- over a range of modalities including but not limited to telephone, web and email
- to children and young people aged 5-25 years through Kids Helpline
- to parents
- to face-to-face clients of BoysTown
- in line with operational Counselling Centre benchmarks and priorities
2. To manage client needs through:
- appropriate assessment, intervention, referrals and closure in a timely fashion
- capacity to enter data with a clinical component with technical accuracy
case management
3. To be committed to performance development through:
- expanding knowledge of counselling theory and practice
- active participation in clinical and shift supervision
- being open to feedback and learning
- participation in organisational evaluations and research
4. To provide culturally sensitive counselling
5. To treat callers and colleagues with respect in line with BoysTown values
6. To promote the understanding of the role and function of Kids Helpline and Parentline in the community as requested
7. To contribute to the development of web content relevant to the Counselling Centre and its clients
8. Other duties as requested by the Manager, Counselling Centre
Selection Criteria:
Essential
- Relevant degree in Psychology, Social Work, Counselling, Human Services or similar, and 1-3 years counselling/work experience.
- Demonstrated high level of commitment to the principles of client centred practice, empowerment and confidentiality.
- Ability to be flexible and resilient and to manage within a shift work environment.
- Demonstrated skills in effective interpersonal communication.
- Well developed written communication skills
- Demonstrated ability in, or capacity to acquire, telephone and online counselling skills as practiced by BoysTown.
- Knowledge of or the ability to rapidly acquire knowledge of counselling theories and the strengths and limitations of the telephone and online mediums for counselling.
- Demonstrated understanding of social issues confronting children, young people and their families.
