Navigator’s Notes

Worthy Sir Knights,

As you may or may not beware, at the 135 Supreme convention, it was announced that the 4th Degree order has changed its uniform/regalia.
The main emphasis for the change is the recruitment of younger members into the 4th Degree Order. 70% of 4th Degree Sir Knights are over 70 years old. The new Uniform is geared to those younger "millennials" who have less interests in established institutions and traditions. Recruitment and new members drive the Order's success, and the Uniform has been developed to assist in the recruitment of the younger demographics.
The new Uniform will replace service regalia for all Color Corps activities. Social regalia will no longer be required wear for the Exemplification and other ceremonials. Sir Knights may wear dark black, grey, or blue suit with a plain white shirt and basic/conservative style tie. Both jacket and pants must be dark in color. Brown, green, or other color suits are not authorized.
Uniform for the Exemplification: Black tuxedoes and social regalia will no longer be required for candidates and observers.
Candidates for the 4th Degree may wear a dark black, grey, or blue suit with a plain white shirt and basic/conservative style tie. Both jacket and pants must be dark in color. Brown, green, or other color suits are not authorized. If candidates chose to wear a tux, it must be worn with a flat collar formal shirt (NO RUFFLES OR WING COLLARS), black bow tie and cummerbund (NO VESTS), black socks and plain black dress shoes.
Active duty Military may wear their formal dress dining uniform. Policemen and Firemen may wear their dress uniform.
4th Degree Sir Knights attending the Exemplification as observers may also wear dark black, grey, or blue suit with a plain white shirt and basic/conservative style tie. Both jacket and pants must be dark in color. Brown, green, or other color suits are not authorized. Observers may also be dressed in social regalia.
Those Sir Knights who have the new Uniform are encouraged to wear it.
The implementation begins September 1. At this time, the length of the transition period has not been announced. Expectations range from 6 to 18 months. At the end of the transition period, ONLY the new Uniform will be authorized for wear for Color Corps activities.
The new Uniform is available for purchase ONLY though Knights Gear, on line or by phone. (http://www.knightsgear.com/regalia) The Uniform package includes the jacket, pants, tie, and beret. It does not include the shirt, socks, or shoes. Cost for the Uniform is $510. The jacket is made in Italy so the size may run smaller than a jacket made in the USA. It is recommended that you get measured by a tailor prior to ordering.
Sir Knights please remember that FN John Bair did not implement this uniform, if you have any questions or concerns pleasecontact the Supreme Masters office by telephone: (203) 752-4437or email

SLOW DOWN

Many of our New Year's resolutions may actually accelerate our pace of life instead of helping us to slow down. In a quest for greater productivity and efficiency, we over schedule our days, then rush through meals, drive impatiently, and wonder why the joy of living eludes us.

Slowing down can positively affect our lives at work and at home. Rushing can clod our judgment and cause us to overlook important things and valuable people. Slow down a bit, and even entertain the radical idea of welcoming a red traffic light to use the waiting time to meditate.

Isaiah wrote, “You will keep Him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on you, because He trusts in you”. Just for today, try thinking about the verse whenever you have to wait. Isn't it time for all of us to slow down and live?

In keeping with past articles, God is pleased with work done well. He honors good workers, and so should we. God is pleased with His Knights of Columbus and Assembly 2588.

Until next article,

PAX,

PFN Frank Mulcahy

Vietnam War Commemoration

The WEB Site that solicits interest in a Virginia Beach Vietnam Veterans 50th Anniversary Celebration is now up and accepting inputs. The WEB Site is http://www.vietnamvet50thvabeach.org

For all Vietnam Veterans, please fill out the e-mail shown in that WEB Site. The e-mail information will be collected in a spreadsheet to determine just how big an event we must plan for. This information will also be given out to the media and hope that they publish it appropriately. A special e-mail account for the collection of the information has been set up at . My COX account will be used for the event arrangements only.

The above WEB Site also explains who the commemoration recipients are and what the Lapel Pins look like. It also gives a link to the national DoD Site for additional information. A key element on this celebration is that the veteran did not have to serve in Vietnam itself to be eligible. Anyone that served on active duty in the Armed Forces from November 1, 1955 to May 15, 1975 is eligible. The second key element is that the surviving spouses are also eligible to participate in this ceremony.

Thank you in advance and hope we can get a good response from the many Vietnam Veterans in Virginia Beach. The target timeframe for the event is in the Fall. What the event will entail will depend on the response received on the WEB Site.

“SERVING THOSE WHO SERVED…”
OUR SYMBOL:

Sir Knights of the Fourth Degree, deem it an honor and privilege to carry our TRIAD EMBLEM, which features The Dove, The Cross, and The Globe. Our Honored Order cherishes as its Patron, Christopher Columbus.

Spiritually, the sacred symbols fashioned on our sword and lapel pin, typify the union of the Three Divine Persons in one GodheadThe Most Holy Trinity.

o  The GlobeGod the Father, Creator of the Universe.

o  The CrossGod the Son, Redeemer of Mankind.

o  The DoveGod the Holy Spirit, Sanctifier of Humanity.

HISTORY: In the early years of the Fourth Degree, members met as part of their councils, mostly after meetings. In 1910, during a reorganization of the Order's leadership, the first Assemblies were created. Additionally the position of Supreme Master was established to lead the Fourth Degree internationally. Vice Supreme Masters lead Provinces and Masters head Districts. This system has spread and flourished as Sir Knights not only serve their local Church through their service to local councils but also their joint efforts in these Assemblies. The Honor Guard, first called for in 1886 was officially formed in 1902, for ceremonial purposes. Since that time, the uniforms of the Color Corps have varied, however all have shared the similar theme of mariners. Most noticeable in today's current uniform is the chapeau worn with ostrich feathers.

MEMBERSHIP: The Fourth Degree ritual added patriotism to the three original principles of the order: charity, unity, fraternity. Any Third Degree member in good standing with at least six months membership in the order – is eligible for membership in the Forth Degree. The primary purpose of the Forth Degree is to foster the spirit of patriotism by promoting responsible citizenship and love of and loyalty to the knights’ respective countries through active membership in local Forth Degree groups called Assemblies. Fourth Degree members must retain their membership as Third Degree members in the local council to remain in good standing.

EVENTS: The first Exemplification of the new Degree was scheduled to be held in the Astor Hotel in New York City on February 22, 1900. However, there were so many candidates the Exemplification had to be moved to a larger venue. Therefore the site was moved to the Lenox Lyceum. At this first Exemplification of the Fourth Degree 1,100 members of the Knights of Columbus, being in good standing "took their fourth." The second Exemplification, held in Boston on May 8, 1900 saw another 750 Third Degree knights join the ranks of Sir Knights. cherishes as its Patron, Christopher Columbus.

Once a Sir Knight attains an office, he is entitled to wear the colors of that office until elected or appointed to a higher office, except for the Marshal [appointed by the Master of District] and the Color Corps Commanders [appointed by the Faithful Navigator] who are appointed for a specific term and then revert to their previous colors when
