Student and Academic Concerns Committee

(Appendix to the HendrixCollege Student Senate Bylaws)

Purpose:

The Student and Academic Concerns Committee (SACC) is a Committee of the Senate of the Hendrix College Student Association. The Senate charges SACC with counseling the Senate on matters concerning student and academic life pertinent to the College. Further, SACC will develop and maintain relationships with chairs of the many faculty, student/faculty, and student committees on campus in order to increase Senate’s awareness of and involvement in myriad facets of campus life.

Membership:

SACC shall be co-chaired by the Presidential Assistant of the Student Senate and the Academic Policy Representative.

Six (6) Senators shall serve on SACC:

  • Freshman Representative
  • Sophomore Representative
  • Junior Representative
  • Senior Representative
  • Two (2) Living Unit Representatives

A majority shall be necessary for all motions and shall be defined as four (4) votes.

Each member shall have one (1) vote except for the Presidential Assistant of the Student Senate and the Academic Policy Representative who shall share one (1) vote and may vote only in order to create a majority. Should one of the co-chairs be absent from a regular meeting, the co-chair present shall assume the additional one-half (½) vote.

A quorum which shall be defined as four (4) votes shall be necessary for committee business.

SACC may choose, but is not required to choose, non-voting advisors to aid its work.

Attendance:

Members are required to attend all regular meetings called by the co-chairs unless otherwise stated in the Bylaws of the Student Senate.

Co-Chairs’ Responsibilities:

In collaboration with the Committee’s members, the co-chairs shall share the responsibility of creating a mission statement and purpose which shall guide its work.

The co-chairs shall be responsible for planning, announcing, and presiding over regular meetings. The co-chairs shall give at least one (1) week’s notice prior to meeting.

The co-chairs shall alternately preside over regular meetings such that neither the Presidential Assistant of the Student Senate nor the Academic Policy Representative ever chairs two consecutive meetings unless either co-chair is ill or otherwise unable to attend a regular meeting.

The co-chairs shall assign a member to take minutes of each meeting and shall make these minutes available to the Senate’s Executive Committee after approval by a majority vote of the committee.

The Presidential Assistant of the Student Senate shall from time to time report the committee’s dealings to the Senate. The Academic Policy Representative shall report the committee’s dealings to the faculty and/or its committees as deemed appropriate by him/her.

Amendments:

Amendments to this document shall be initiated by a majority vote of SACC and subject to a majority vote of Senate. The Senate shall have the authority to amend this document without the approval of the committee.
