Beach-Going Wheelchair for Hire

The Disabled Surf Association has a 'Sand-Cruiser' wheelchair available for free hire at the Point Leo Surf Life-Saving Club on the Mornington Peninsula.

You can book the chair for use during daylight hours by ringing Andrew on:

0407332264 or email

He will make an appointment with you to collect the chair. It will be necessary for you and/or your carer to read and acknowledge that you have understood the terms and conditions (these are just common sense conditions for safe use of the chair) and sign a waiver form that you and/or your Carer accept responsibility for your safety and safe return of the chair in its original condition. You will be expected to wash down the chair afterwards to remove any salt spray or sand.

It's that easy.....!

Use of Beach Wheelchair at Point Leo

Carers Must Read This Section Before Use

Welcome to the Disabled Surfing Association Mornington Peninsula 'Beach Wheelchair Program'! We hope you enjoy your sojourn around Point Leo, but first, so you can get the best enjoyment out of the chair and keep yourselves safe, just some words of advice…

The approach to the beach from the Life Saving Club is steep with soft sand.

You must asses for yourself if you are fit and strong enough to push the wheelchair and your charge back up the sand dune.

1.It is recommended that you get a feel for the Sandcruiser chair by pushing your charge on the grassed area before tackling the sand.

2.Unless you are at least equal to your charge's weight and physically fit, it's advisable for 2 people to push with the Sandcruiser if the person in the chair is over 60-70 kg,

3.If you have any misgivings about going down to the beach – keep to the grassed areas of the park (there are some very scenic areas). The Ranger or Life Saving personnel can't really be expected to come to assist, except, of course, in an emergency.

4.Please be wary of sharp stones and twigs as the tyres are expensive and easily punctured.

5.On days where there is no patrol on the beach, the Sandcruiser is not, under any circumstances, to be taken into the water.

6.On days when there is a patrol on the beach, you must first check with the Patrol Captain to ask if it is safe to go near the water.

7.If the Captain gives the OK to venture into the water, the Sandcruiser can be used on the water's edge but no deeper than axle depth and within the flagged area of the patrol. Please note, the chair can float and become highly unstable in deeper water – beware!!

8.If you venture down the sand dune to the beach, descend with the chair backwards – it's more comfortable for both you and the chair occupant. Also, in soft, dry sand, do the same, turn the chair round - you'll find it a lot easier.

9.The seat belt should be used at all times. The anti-tipping bar (which doubles as a brake) is strongly recommended when stationary.

10.After use, the Sandcruiser must be returned to SLSC in the same condition as you took it. Discuss anything that concerns you with the host. Please wash it down with a bucket of fresh water.

11.The beach wheelchair is only to be used within the confines of the Point Leo Foreshore Reserve.Do not transport it off site.
