AN 105 A: Fieldwork

Each student will have to undertake a research project in an area of specialization within Social-Cultural Anthropology. Each student will be working under the guidance and supervision of a permanent faculty member of the department. The objective of the course is to impart practical training in the preparation of research design or plan of study. The researcher has to make certain decisions with respect to the following questions:

1.  What the study is about? (i.e the selection of the research topic)

2.  What types of data are needed?

3.  Why the study is being made?

4.  Where the study will be carried on?

5.  When the study will be made?

6.  How much material or data will be needed?

7.  What sampling procedures will be adopted?

8.  What techniques of data gathering will be adopted?

9.  What studies have been already done on the chosen topic of study? (i.e review of literature)

The student is also required to prepare interview guides and schedules. The research design thus prepared will have to be submitted in the form of a dissertation of about 5000 words. The dissertation will be evaluated and viva-voce examination will be held by internal and external examiners.
