From the desk of Mr. Hawkins
HMS Assistant Superintendent
Good afternoon,
On August 8th 2012, the Hobbs Municipal Schools was contacted by Marcia Knight, with the Public Education Department (PED) and informed that our current practice of granting Dual Credit to Advanced Placement courses could no longer continue.
This means that students expecting to earn dual credit while taking an Advanced Placement course will not be allowed the privilege of earning Dual Credit and AP simultaneously in the following courses beginning school year 2012-2013.
· AP Micro Economics , AP Government and Politics, AP US History
· AP English Literature and Composition, AP Language and Composition
· AP Statistics, AP Calculus AB
· AP Biology, AP Chemistry
Students will need to select one of two options.
OPTION 1
Take the course as an Advanced Placement class
· Students will need to earn a 3, 4 or 5 to earn the college credit for the course.
· Students will not be allowed to switch to the Dual Credit class after the September deadline.
· The course will appear as an Advanced Placement course on the transcript.
· Students will take the AP exam for final grade.
· Students will receive earned bonus points solely for class ranking.
OR
OPTION 2
Take the course as a Dual Credit class
· The student will continue to earn this credit from the New Mexico Junior College.
· Students will not be allowed to switch to the Advanced Placement class after the September deadline.
· The course will appear as a Dual Credit course on the transcript.
· Students will take the AP exam for final grade.
· Students will receive earned bonus points solely for class ranking.
HMS students in the above listed courses will still be able to earn bonus points in both the AP and dual credit classes. The points will be applied for these classes only if the final semester average is 70 or above at the end of each semester. Bonus points are used solely for class ranking and do not affect the cumulative GPA.
All students will be required to take the AP exam in the spring as the final exam in the course as it has been in previous years. The only change is what will appear on the transcript, AP Course, or Dual Credit.
If you have any questions, please contact the campus counselor or administrators at 433-0200.
