Outline of the Course:

A basic course emphasising the metric system, introduction to stoichiometry, the structural and physical properties of matter, gases, thermochemistry, quantum theory of the atom, electronic structure of atoms, chemical bonding, molecular geometry, hybridisation and molecular orbitals.

TextbookSupplementaryTexts:

“Chemistry”, Chang and Goldsby, 12thEdition, McGraw-Hill, 2016. You are required to have access to a copy of the textbook. There are several copies at the Library, as well as other excellent texts on the subject that you can borrow. You are well advised to review them in conjunction with your lecture notes.

The Course:

Course instruction is 3 hours/week. Lectures are supplemented by a compulsory one-session-per-week laboratory work. 10 chapters will be covered in the semester. The following table contains the course details. You should read the relevant lecture material beforehand for maximum benefit.

There will be three midterm examsand one final exam. Dates and venues will be published by the Registrar, so please check CET regularly. Other important exam data will be published on the course page on my website, and updated as required. Please check it frequently.

Lab Work:

Lab experiments are to be conducted under the supervision of a lab instructor. Teamwork and coherent experimentation is the aim of your lab work, and therefore emphasis will be placed on completing the experiments as teams rather than as individuals. You are required to have your own lab coat, goggles and the lab manual. Lab scheduling will be provided by your lab instructor.You are advised to read the relevant lab material before the lab session, as you will have to pass a quiz before you are allowed to start your lab work.

Laboratory attendance is compulsory. Please study the provided lab schedule (see the course page) and complete all experiments. IF YOU DO NOT COMPLETE ALL EXPERIMENTS, YOUR FINALLETTER GRADE FOR THE COURSE WILL AUTOMATICALLY BE NA. THIS MEANS THAT YOU WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO SIT FOR THE FINAL EXAM AT THE END OF THE SEMESTER. YOU HAVE TO PASS THE LAB IN ORDER TO PASS THE COURSE. THE PASSING GRADE IS 6.00/10 FOR THE LAB. ANY LAB GRADE BELOW 6.00/10 WILL MEAN AN AUTOMATIC FF AS YOUR COURSE LETTER GRADE, NO MATTER WHAT YOU GET IN EXAMS AND QUIZZES.

Students are strongly encouraged to expand their knowledge of the course through the use of other relevant books and supplementary material. Office Hours:

Students should feel free to discuss any question(s) related with the course during office hours (announced on my website). My office is at SZ-44. You can consult any available member of the Chemistry Group on any topic that you might wish to discuss or explore.

Tutorial Hours:

There will be no tutorial as such. Instead, all chemistry staff will be at your disposal to answer any questions you might have. Check the office hours. In addition to that, I shall post some tutorial questions/problems and full solutions on the course page.

Grading:

Your final letter grade will be based on a weighted average of the following:

Lab – 10% (Previous lab work may be accepted – see your lab instructor)

Midterms – 20% each

Final – 30%

Attendance:

Attendance will be recorded at all lectures. Please note that you are expected to attend all lectures as this will help you grasp lecture material. You will also have the opportunity to clarify any confusion right at the relevant spot.
