Purpose

Today’s job market and global economy require the ability of employees to understand and use new technologies. In order to obtain and retain employment in current positions and future positions within companies, it is vital that students be taught from an early age the significance and proper way to use technology in order for them to be able to compete with others from their own country as well as countries around the world.

Preparing Treadway Elementary School students for living in such a technological world involves helping them to understand and apply technologies, as well as, allowing them the opportunities to determine which forms of technology to use based on specific goals and individual preferences. In addition, there is a stronger need for heightened skills in instructional technology for the classroom teachers. As with other subjects, teachers need to have the knowledge, ability, and tools available, in which to model the use of technology.

Treadway has organized a Technology Team made up of administrators, teachers, and other staff, who will keep up with the latest equipment, software, and other tools available. This team will also serve as technology mentors for the rest of the staff in order to assist them in using the equipment and software available to them.

The purpose of the Treadway Elementary School Technology Plan is to:

· Support the Office of Educational Technology and the District Strategic Plans for Technology.

· Support and encourage the use of technology in every classroom.

· Foster collaboration and communication among all stakeholders.

It is the responsibility of the Treadway Technology Team to help support and achieve our District’s mission, “To prepare individuals for successful lifelong learning, productive employment, and responsible citizenry by providing a safe, resource-filled learning environment,” by ensuring that our students, teachers, administrators, and staff have the technologies to meet this challenge. This technology plan offers direction for making certain that our technologies and technology services stay focused on the mission of making technology and the use of technology a paramount issue at Treadway Elementary School.

In addition to the above mission statement for all areas of the School Board’s perspective, the following

goals have been designated as priorities for our Treadway plan.

1. Enhance Student Learning Opportunities & Experiences

2. Improve Teacher, Administrator, & Staff Training

3. Strengthen Instructional & Administrative Productivity

4. Increase Parent & Community Communications

5. Improve Network Resources & Delivery of Resources

The Treadway Technology Team members are:

Dr. Rhonda Boone -- Administrator

Cindy Christidis – Administrator

Susan Jordan -- Administrator

Loretta Vroman – School Technologist/Certified teacher

Ida Scheinfeld -- Parent/Paraprofessional

Vina Barr -- Literacy Coach/Certified teacher

Melissa St. Louis-Curry -- Media Specialist/Certified teacher

Funding

Treadway investigates every possible source to obtain funds for technology; funding sources for the improvement of existing technology and acquisition of new technology continues to be sought through grant applications, fund-raising, donations, and business partnerships. Treadway will encourage the efficient use of funds and resources in a manner, which ensures that all teachers and students have access to technologies that improve student competencies.

Currently the district provides a yearly refresh of older computers by swapping out older model computers for newer ones. This funding is based on the District budget each year and is not guaranteed.

Technology Acquisition Plan

Treadway uses the District’s Information/Technology website to find the recommended, state-contracted, Board-approved vendors who have a history of providing reputable products.

This District list covers all computers, computer-related hardware, and supply items used by the District. The technology department provides this list in order to:

· Maintain uniform standards

· Vendor contracting

· Vendor selection

· Vendor communications

· Issuing purchase requisitions and purchase orders

Access

An overall goal of obtaining equity among classes at Treadway will be established and supported by active

awareness and pursuance of alternate funding sources, in order to bring state of the art technology into every

class room. Treadway realizes that some classrooms need more sophisticated technology than others. While some classes need access to Microsoft Office applications as well as internet and database research access, others need only to run individual learner based software and access to server applications.

Equitable access to telecommunications and other technologies to support teaching and learning will be

guaranteed to all students. All filtering mechanisms and procedures implemented will meet and/or exceed all

requirements of the Federal CIPA (Children’s Internet Protection Act) legislation. When teachers have

problems with legitimate research sites being blocked, they will contact our technology network support

associate to submit a work order to request the availability of the site.

Treadway has provided a link to the District website and will select technology personnel or designees whose

responsibilities will include, but not be limited to, receiving and disseminating current technology information,

coordinating the school technology team, preparing purchase orders related to hardware and software, and

helping teachers determine their in-service needs.

The School Board approved Network and Internet Acceptable Use and Safety Policy and Administrative

Procedures for all students and staff will be distributed and are available on the District’s website.

These documents are inclusive of the safety measurements in compliance with the Children’s Internet

Protection Act. The District-implemented procedures require that teachers and students follow CIPA

requirements that protect the confidentiality of students. These measures include a Student and Staff Network

and Internet Acceptable Use and Safety Agreement to be signed by all students and staff annually. Treadway

requires students to complete this documentation during registration. Staff completes the agreement during

preplanning and all records are kept on site at Treadway.

User Support

Treadway Elementary School has a considerably high investment in computer hardware and software both for

administrative and instructional purposes. The demand for technology services and support has increased in

direct proportion to the escalating number of school technology users, computers, and available software

applications. The role of technology support impacts all aspects of our school’s operations:

· Instructional operations – Educational Applications, Attendance, Grade Reporting, Lesson Planning,

Quality Data-Driven Decision Making, Technical Assistance and Training

· Communications – Email, Automated Telephony Messaging, Websites

To address critical technology concerns such server and network issues and software compatibility, the District provides tech support. This support is handled mostly through remote assistance, however if necessary a tech specialist can be sent to the school campus when a tech/work order is submitted.

To address day-to-day technology concerns at the school level, Treadway Elementary will ensure that there are on-site technology personnel. Treadway currently has 1 full-time technology teacher-support employee, and one part-time technology teacher’s assistant-support employee. They will keep an open line of communication with the District’s Educational Technology staff, which is dedicated to direct end-user support activities, such as training, help desk, second level software support, LAN support, hardware repair and others.

Professional Development

Treadway shall initiate a Professional Development Plan to include the following:

1. Use of a Teacher/Staff technology survey, to be administered at the end of each school year and assist in the planning for the following year. The survey will also help identify individual teacher’s basic skills and competency levels.

2. Use of the Treadway Technology Team to tabulate the results of the surveys and use the data

collected to formulate a staff level in-service plan and coordinating activities. The team shall give

consideration to the availability and use of technology in classroom instruction and the potential impact

of technological improvements on student achievement.

Objectives:

· Encourage the efficient use of new instructional technologies by the administration, teachers,

and staff.

· Provide teacher-training sessions each year geared to instruction and/or

reinforcement of new computer technologies for the classroom including development of

teacher websites and computer-assisted instruction.

· Support the Technology Specialist’s and Media Specialist’s ongoing training as a critical

component of coordinating the network capabilities necessary for technological improvement.

Program Evaluation

Treadway will use an annual Teacher Technology Survey, and will use the findings to determine if the teachers/staff are using more/less of the technology available, and if the teachers/staff need more training.

The program evaluation results will be used during the School Technology team’s review of the school

technology plan each year. In this way, Treadway can more effectively plan for training, hardware, and software acquisition.
