ICT.OPEN 2012, the Interface for Dutch ICT-Research

Theme 5: ASCI - Computing and Imaging

Call for Contributions

ICT.OPEN 2012 is the main ICT and computer science research conference of the Netherlands. It features several plenary and invited presentations, as well as contributed oral and poster presentations.

During the ICT.OPEN conference the three Dutch research schools in computer science, namely ASCI, IPA, and SIKS, will be responsible for three themed tracks, which run in parallel. The three themes are, respectively, Computing & Imaging, Programming & Algorithmics, and Information and Knowledge Systems. The ICT.OPEN conference will host a broad range of areas and research manifestations, including lectures from staff members of ASCI, IPA, and SIKS, conference-wide and per-theme keynote lectures, a Doctoral Symposium with parallel tracks, full papers from ASCI PhD students, and a joint poster session for all research schools. Each research schools calls for contributions to its own track, which includes all the research topics of the respective school.

The Annual ASCI Conference, which represents this year Theme 5 of ICT.OPEN 2012, provides a forum for senior researchers and PhD students of ASCI to report on and discuss their research projects. Prospective authors are invited to submit full papers and, separately, Doctoral Symposium contributions.

SCOPE/TOPICS:

Theme 5 - ASCI Computing & Imaging includes but is not limited to research on algorithms, methods and techniques for:

- Distributed, embedded, grid, and cloud computing.

- High-performance/High-sustainability (green) computing and networking.

- Large-scale data management systems, computational sciences, and bioinformatics.

- Image and multimedia sensing, processing, interpretation, and visualization.

- Multimedia information systems.

- Machine learning and applications.

Other topics are possible.

CONTRIBUTIONS:

Full papers and Doctoral Symposium contributions can be submitted online via de conference submission system, which is based on EasyChair, via the link:

If submitting a full paper, you have to submit it to Theme 5 - the ASCI track. When submitting a Doctoral Symposium contribution, please specify the research school that should evaluate it, either ASCI (Theme 5) or IPA or SIKS. Details on formatting full papers and Doctoral Symposium contributions follow. This year, Theme 5 (ASCI) will select a Best Paper, a Best Poster, and a Best Presentation award.

All full paper contributions will be reviewed. The Theme 5 Program Committee assigns an accepted contribution to either the poster session or a podium (full) presentation, depending on the advice of the reviewers. All accepted papers will be published in the proceedings of the conference, regardless if they have been accepted for full presentation or as a poster. All accepted papers can also present a poster during the poster session of ICT.OPEN 2012.

GUIDELINES FULL PAPER SUBMISSION:

Theme 5 (ASCI) requests contributions in the form of full papers. Prospective authors are invited to submit papers presenting recent research that is relevant to Theme 5’s (ASCI’s) topics.

Full papers in PDF format can be submitted online via the EasyChair conference submission system. Authors should specify that the paper is submitted to Theme 5. Papers should not exceed 6 pages in double column format, with point size 10 and regular vertical spacing. Papers should adhere to scientific standards: be carefully prepared, be clearly written, and have tables and illustrations where appropriate. You may use the following ictopen2012.cls file. An example sampleictopen.tex file that uses this class file is also available for your convenience.

The reviewers will have different, broad areas of expertise, so be sure to provide sufficient motivation and background in your submitted article. Reviewers will be instructed to give preference for podium (full) presentation to papers with high scientific novelty.

IMPORTANT! Because of copyright concerns, authors should include on the first page of their full paper submission, as a footnote, the text “This paper has been submitted for presentation at ICT.OPEN 2012. This is the national Dutch ICT conference and serves, for this paper, the role of training the presentation skills rather than to push scientific limits. ICT.OPEN does not claim copyright. For this reason, ICT.OPEN 2012 encourages authors to submit mostly papers that have been sent to or have recently been presented at international conferences.”

GUIDELINES DOCTORAL SYMPOSIUM SUBMISSION:

Themes 5 (ASCI), 6 (IPA), and 7 (SIKS) request contributions to their Doctoral Symposia on Tuesday 23 October. A Doctoral Symposium provides a forum for students in the areas of interest of Themes 5-7. The goals of the Doctoral Symposium are to provide a supportive yet questioning setting in which PhD students can present their work and to better prepare PhD students for a good start in a globally relevant career. Students who are advanced in their PhD track can receive valuable feedback on their PhD thesis topics and advice on their research career from internationally renowned experts, and engage in discussions and networking with peer PhD students.

Each Doctoral Symposium submission should have as the sole or the main author a PhD student, who must be officially enrolled in a PhD program at the time of submission. The other authors who may be listed on the submission need to be the (co-)supervisors of the PhD student. The PhD students are expected to have at least one year left in their PhD track, which would allow them to make full use of received advice.

Doctoral Symposium contributions, in PDF format, can be submitted online via the EasyChair conference submission system. Authors should clearly specify in the paper the Theme to which the paper is submitted to. Contributions should not exceed 2 pages in double column format, with point size 10 and regular vertical spacing. You may use the following ictopen2012.cls file. An example sampleictopen.tex file that uses this class file is also available for your convenience.

Contributions should include:

●An introduction that describes the context, the technical problem, previous approaches (briefly), and proposed approach (briefly). Describe the societal and/or industrial and/or academic relevance of the problem. Focus on the novelty of the proposed approach.

●Information about the importance of the thesis topic for a particular Theme. The Theme should be clearly identified.

●An account of related and prior works explaining why these works have not solved the problem.

●A sketch and/or explanation of the proposed approach.

●A description of the methods you are using or will use to carry out your research.

●The results obtained so far, and remaining topics of concern.

Students selected by the Program Committee of each Theme will present their work to an audience that consists of both experts and peer students, and are also encouraged to exhibit their work via a poster.

IMPORTANT! Although submitting a Doctoral Symposia work under different rules than core scientific publications, because of copyright concerns, authors should include on the first page of their Doctoral Symposium submission , as a footnote, the text “This thesis overview has been submitted for presentation at ICT.OPEN 2012.

PROCEEDINGS AND COPYRIGHT:

Submission to the conference is non-exclusive: submitted papers may also be submitted to more specialized conferences with official, peer-reviewed proceedings. Although submissions will be reviewed for ICT.OPEN as well, the proceedings will not be a copyrighted book. Reviewing serves to provide feedback to the authors and to decide on acceptance as an oral or poster presentation.

IMPORTANT! Please check in the submission guidelines of the type of contribution you make for more details about copyright.
