What will be achieved?
(10 Points) / Students enrolled in Eng 51, starting in fall 2008, will have a space to work in and trained staff and tutors to help them improve their writing skills and complete a new lab requirement. This project is also a first step towards completing a large scale plan to expand lab and tutorial services in response to recommendations from the writing and reading faculty.
Justification: Why should this be done?
(20 points) / The change in curriculum for Eng 51 adds 15 hrs per semester of required lab attendance for all students enrolled in this course. This required lab will be supported by the ASC Reading/Writing Lab. A study of fall enrollments for all courses supported by the Reading/Writing lab shows that, with thenew lab requirement for Eng 51, a typical fall semester would require us to support 41,974 hrs of seat time in the lab. (See attached calculations.) However, even if all seats were filled every hour we are open,the current lab space can only support 37,200 hrs of seat time per semester. Unless we use the space in room E5, we cannot support the new curriculum.

- “Use technology to expand opportunities for student learning and student services” (Expanding lab space allows students access to technologies and services required by curriculum and important for student learning.)
- “Ensure an equitable delivery of quality programs and services at all campus/centers and that a sufficient number of full-time faculty is maintained” (Without this added lab space, there will be inequitable treatment because not all students will be able to complete required lab attendance.)
- “Improve the utilization of human, physical, technological, and fiscal resources; maintain fiscal stability at all times” (The recommendation is the most fiscally conservative solution to providing the technological support required by the revised curriculum)
Student Learning: The teaching faculty have added a lab requirement to Eng. 51 because they recognize that the mix of computer and tutorial support provided in the lab effectively improves composition skills. In a lab, support can be targeted to a student’s individual learning needs in ways that are not possible in the classroom.

Will this proposal benefit other areas of the college? / Yes. In addition to supporting the new course requirement, the added lab space may provide at least some additional space for students in other academic courses that need help with writing papers.
Will this proposal impact or require accommodations from other areas? / Yes. The space in E5 is used for assessment testing and for support of special lab requirements for Learning Communities. General assessment will not be affected, because we are dividing available lab time between scheduled assessment times and lab support. However, we have received requests to provide special assessment support for Nursing that will now be harder to provide. Learning Communities have used E5 in the past; however, the college has turned more towards tutorial support for LCs, so we do not expect the demand on lab space we have had in the past.

The ASC Writing Lab can seat 40 students and is open 62 hrs a week. Lab attendance is generally not counted during finals week, so the lab is effectively open 15 weeks in a fall semester.
40 seats X 62 hrs X 15 wks = 37,200 hrs of seat time per semester.
Of course, since the lab is open on a drop in basis, actual student demand varies. There are times when we have waiting lists and times when the lab is not full. This pattern will be exacerbated by the additional lab time for Eng 51.
