This course takes a comprehensive look at many areas concerning Americans today in regard to their Physical, Mental/Emotional and Social Health. Classroom discussions about personal health and wellness should help the students understand the importance of making their health a priority.
Physical fitness and lifetime activities along with nutrition and meal planning will allow the students to understand the need for a lifestyle that enhances their Physical health. The stress today’s teens face can be overwhelming and must be addressed. The students will learn valuable methods of dealing with everyday stress. Forming strong family ties as well as maintaining and nurturing friendships are also important in managing one’s Emotional health. Understanding one’s anatomy and functions is important and includes reproduction, Sexually Transmitted Diseases and contraceptives.
Tobacco, Alcohol and Illegal Drugs are topics that will be studied. An understanding of harmful effects of using these products will be emphasized. The students will watch the story of Darius Weems, a 15 year old that faces the challenge and fate with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD). This documentary proves to people of all ages how life, even when imperfect, is always worth the ride.
Grades: 75%=Summatives (Tests/Quizzes) & Projects
