*A GOSPEL WORTH SHARING
(Rom. 1:16-18)
Intro:After introducing the Messenger, the Message and his own Motives in the first 15 verses of this book, the Apostle Paul turns the spotlight on the Gospel that he is going to be writing about. In these 2 verses, we are given one of the greatest summaries of the Gospel ever written by man. For it is in these verses that we can see a clear declaration of God's power and purpose in the Gospel message.
1. What is the gospel the true gospel? If we ask that question of Religion it might say Join the Church, be baptized, receive sacraments.
2. I don=t want to know what religion says it is I want to know what the word of God says it is: (1Co 15:3-4) For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; 4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:
I. NOTICE THE PERSON OF THE GOSPEL. (V.16a)
1. Notice it is theAgospel of Christ@
A. Consider he is Love.
1. (1Jo 4:8) He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.
(1Jo 4:16) And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him.
B. Consider he is the Lamb.
1. (Joh 1:29) The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.
C. Consider he is the Lord.
1. (Ac 2:36) Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made that same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ.
II. NOTICE THE POWER OF THE GOSPEL. (V.16b)
1. Nowhere is the power of God so visible as it is in the Gospel of Christ! Think about it! When God takes a lost sinner and saves him by His grace and makes him a new creature, that is a powerful thing. God could have sent us all to Hell, but He instead chose to send us His love wrapped up in His Son, the Lord Jesus. I thank the Lord that He loved us first - (1 John 4:19.)
A. Consider the Might of the gospel.
1. Paul tells us that the Gospel is the"power of God". The word "power" comes from a word that refers to the "might, energy, force and strength that dwell within God."
B. Consider the Miracle of the gospel.
1. AUnto salvation@. This word means, complete deliverance from sin and death, and all the foes and dangers that beset man. It cannot imply anything less than eternal life. If a man should believe and then fall away, he could in no correct sense be said to be saved. And hence when the apostle declares that it is the power of God unto salvation "to every one that believeth, " it implies that all who become believers "shall be kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation, "( see #1Pe 1:5) and that none shall ever fall away and be lost.
C.Consider the Message of the gospel. 1. Notice that Paul's message is the"gospel of Christ." Make no mistake about it, there are many different gospels being preached in our day. There is the Gospel of religion that says, "Turn over a new leaf." There is the gospel of materialism that says, "Your worth is determined by what you have. Gain is the goal of life." There is the Gospel of liberalism that says "I'm OK and you're OK. God accepts us like we are and will take us to Heaven if Heaven really exists." There is the Gospel of society that says, "Do as you please for life is short." Paul's message, on the other hand, says, "You are a sinner, and if you die in your sins, you will go the Hell. However, God loves you and sent His Son, the Lord Jesus into the world. Jesus died for your sins and rose from the dead. If you will place your faith in Him, then you can and will be eternally saved." Tell me, Which Gospel are you trusting in?
III.NOTICE THE PURPOSE OF THE GOSPEL. (V.16c)A...unto salvation...@
1. Why did God go to such lengths for men? Why did He give up His Son to die on the cross for the sins of humanity? The primary answer is simply that He loves us. However there is more to it than that. God's plan and God's purpose in giving the Gospel message is "salvation."
2. The word "salvation" is a very important word. It means, "safety, preservation, deliverance." It carries the idea of "being rescued from all harm and danger." God's desire in saving sinners is to forever deliver them from spiritual death, spiritual defilement, spiritual deception and spiritual destruction. Lest we forget, the end of all sinners, outside the Lord Jesus, is the fire of Hell. God purpose in giving the Gospel is to change man's destination in eternity and his life here on earth as well.
3. So we see his purpose is to Deliver;
A. From the Power of Sin.
B. From the Punishment of Sin. (Rom.6:23)
C. From the Pleasure of Sin.
D. From the Presence of Sin. (I Thess.4:13-18)
IV. NOTICE THE PLAN OF THE GOSPEL.(V.16c)
1. Verse 16 tells us in no uncertain terms exactly how this Gospel message of salvation is activated. Notice that it is"to every one that believeth."
2. This makes it perfectly clear that biblical salvation does not involve complicated religious rituals or ornate and elaborate religious exercises. Salvation is the product of faith and faith alone! (Ill. Eph. 2:8-9; Titus 2:5).
3. This is the point where many people stumble. People like to do things for themselves. They like to feel that they have a part of everything in their lives. However, in the matter of salvation, the sinner can have no part. It is all God, all the way. Salvation comes to the person who is willing to simply receive the message of Christ by faith, (John 6:47)Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life.
V. NOTICE THE PLEDGE OF THE GOSPEL. (V.16) A...to every one...@
1.This great, saving Gospel message is for every single person in the world! No one is beyond the reach of the Gospel of grace. Notice these words from our Savior: (Rev. 22:17)AAnd the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely@. The pledge of the Gospel is that any one who hears the message and needs the cure can be saved by God's precious grace! So we see;
A. Consider Salvation is Unlimited!AEvery one@
B. Consider Salvation is Unmerited! ABelieveth@
C. Consider Salvation is Universal! (Joh.3:16)
Conc;We have been given a Gospel worth believing and one that is worth sharing. The questions as we bring these thoughts together are these: Are you trusting in the Gospel of Christ for salvation? Are you sharing the Gospel like Paul did? Are you ashamed of the Gospel of Christ? The same message that was able to save then, can save now. The same power that worked in Paul's day is working in our day. All we need to do to see the Gospel work in power is to believe it and to share. When we do these, God will do the rest!

GOD'S JUDGMENT OF THE HYPOCRITE
(Rom. 2:1-16 Text V.1)
Intro: There are multitudes that choose lives of rebellion and disobedience against God, and these people will be held accountable and will feel the full fury of God's wrath against their sin. However, there are just as many others who live moral lives. These are people who are outwardly clean and upright, but who are inwardly just as wicked as their evil counterparts.
In the verses that I have read this evening, Paul turns the spotlight of the Word of God on those who are what we might call hypocrites. That is, they are people who would condemn the actions listed in the latter part of chapter 1, but who have no intention of getting right with God themselves. These people look right outwardly, but inwardly, they are guilty of many of the same sins of the wicked mentioned in chapter 1.
In these verses, the Apostle Paul tells us something about the impending judgment of God against sin. In doing so, he helps to understand just what the judgment of God is about, who will be affected by it and what the results will be. Therefore, let's look into these verses this evening and learn more about the character of God's judgment. There are three truths revealed in this passage that will teach us much about the judgment of God in the life of the hypocrite.
I. CONSIDERTHE REASON FOR GOD'S JUDGMENT. V. 1-5
A. The Sinfulness Of The Hypocrite. (V. 1) Just as surely as the Lord's wrath will be revealed against all those guilty of open sinful, wicked life, we can be sure that it will also be felt by the hypocrite. We all know what a hypocrite is. A hypocrite is someone who merely plays a part. They pretend to be someone and something that they are not. God will not hold this kind of person guiltless.
1. Because Of His Condemnation - One of the reasons God judges the hypocrite is because the hypocrite assumes the place of God in judging the life and conduct of others. It is neither your place, or mine, to pass judgment on another person, Matt. 7:1-5. When we judge, we are guilty before God!
2. Because Of His Conduct - What really takes the cake is that the hypocrite looks at another person and judges them for what they do, but God says that the hypocrite is just as guilty as the person he judges! (Ill. They may not do the same things outwardly, but sin begins in the heart, Matt. 15:16-20. Jesus made it clear in His preaching that to have sin in your heart was as bad as actually doing that sin, Matt. 5:21-38.) Let us beware that we never have a hypocritical spirit!
B. V. 2-3 The Sentence Of The Hypocrite - Just as the wicked will be judged by God, so too shall the hypocrite! In fact, the judgment they will face will be exactly the same! Notice what Paul tells us about this coming judgment.
1. V. 2 The Purity Of The Judge - Paul is telling us that God's judgment of the hypocrite will be based in the truth of what they are, just as surely as His condemnation of those who are openly wicked will be based in the truth of what they are. We must never forget that while man looks on the outside, God looks at the heart, 1 Sam 16:7.
