Scholarships of the Tin Roof Fund at the Homer Foundation

2017Application and Guidelines

The Beluga Tail Nonfiction and BelugaTaleFiction Writing Scholarshipsare supported through the Tin Roof Fund, a donor advised fund at the Homer Foundation. The Fund provides for up to two $3,000 scholarship awards annually for students with a demonstrated skill and passion for writing. Two separate applications must be submitted if applying in both categories.

Award: up to $3000

The Beluga Tale/Tail Writing Scholarship awards may be used for expenses related to continuing education at an accredited two or four year institution, or attendance in a nationally recognized writing program.

Eligibility:

Applicant must be a Homer High School graduating senior with a demonstrated competency and passion for writing, and a dedication to continue writing. No one related to the donor/s, members of the review committee, the Homer Foundation Board of Trustees, or its employees shall be eligible for this scholarship.

Selection Criteria:

This is a competitive application process. Selection will be made without regard for race, color, national origin, gender or sexual orientation of candidate. The following criteria will be considered for selection: personal statement, resume, letters of recommendation, and up to three samples of your own original writing, not to exceed 15 pages. Submit only works that have been edited and represent your best workcreated within the last 12 months. Works should be double-spaced and your name and page number should appear on each page.

Personal Statement: In your statement please address yourcurrent writing experience including writing classes or workshops you have attended, contests won, works published, educational goals, plans, and how writing applies to the rest of your life. Personal statement should speak to your.

A) For students applying to a college, please tell us where you are planning to attend, whether or not you have been accepted, your major area of study, and your career or educational goals, and how your writing will fit into this plan.

B) For students applying for support to attend a writing program that is not part of a broader academic program, please provide a detailed outline of your plans and what you hope to gain from this opportunity. It should include detailed information on the program (brochure), your travel plans with tentative itinerary, a projected budget, and explanation of how you propose to meet expenses not covered by the award. If under 18 years of age you will need to attach a Statement of Support from your parents or guardian. (Note: awards of this type may incur a taxable event for the recipient.)

List any educational activities, workshops, seminars or coursework you have taken that have influenced your writing.

Extracurricular Activities

List clubs and activities you participated in at school.

Honors/Awards

List any accomplishments or recognition you have received during your high school career, including any writing awards, and/or if you have been published.

Volunteer/Community Activities

List clubs, activities and volunteer projects with which you are involved in your community.

Employment

List any work experience you have had in the last 4 years.

Letters of Recommendation: 2 Letters of Recommendation from adults familiar with your writing and to who you are not related.

Writing Samples: 1-3 samples of well-crafted, edited work, not to exceed 15 pages, and has been created within the last 12 months, that are The work shouldappropriate to your application—that is, fiction for the fiction award and nonfiction for the nonfiction award. Examples of fiction are short stories and novel excerpts; examples of nonfiction are personal essays,academic essays, creative nonfiction, journalism, and blog posts. Poetry is not eligible.
