COURSE DESCRIPTION

This conference offers clinical education to primary care providers (MD, DO, PA, NP) and allied health professionals in Eastern Montana. The content covers a range of general clinical review topics that are particularly challenging to evaluate and treat in the frontier primary care setting. Updates, case studies, and clinical strategies for patient evaluation/management in these areas will be presented in an informal atmosphere that facilitates audience participation and discussion.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of this activity, attendees should be able to:

· Discuss current evidence-based guidelines for the evaluation and management of challenging conditions in a wide range of areas.

· Provide clinical strategies for patient evaluation and management, with particular focus on the rural setting.

· Utilize case studies to reinforce evidence-based care, share practice pearls, and generate discussion.

LECTURE OBJECTIVES

Discuss the indications for and process of Mohs surgery.

Identify common contributors to provider burnout, how to recognize burnout, and ways to prevent it.

Discuss the incidence, prevalence, evaluation and course of treatment for HIV, and identify significant drug interactions that can occur in a primary care setting.

ACCREDITATION

Application for CME credit has been filed with the American Academy of Family Physicians. Determination of credit is pending.

AAPA accepts certificates of participation for educational activities certified for Category I credit from AOACCME, Prescribed credit from AAFP, and AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ from organizations accredited by ACCME or a recognized state medical society. Pending CME approval, physician assistants may receive a maximum of 12.50 hours of Category I credit for completing this program.

The Montana Board of Nursing Standards of Continuing Education state that “to qualify as contact hours, continuing education courses must be approved by an accrediting organization or provided by an academic institution of higher learning, a continuing education provider, or an APRN certifying body.” Pending CME approval, nurses may receive a certificate of attendance for 12.50 credits for completing this program.

Discuss metabolism and excretion of uric acid, explain dietary gout-related issues, and review treatment options.

Define PrEP, identify appropriate candidates and discuss guidelines for monitoring patients receiving PrEP.

Consider theories of development of rheumatoid arthritis, recognize why different treatments were chosen, and discuss the future of anti-rheumatic therapy.

Discuss pain management under the new CDC guidelines.

Identify and differentiate common mental disorders and understand initial approaches to treatment, identify the conditions and circumstances in which referral to a mental health provider or an emergency service is appropriate, and identify non-pharmacologic resources and approaches that can improve the patient-provider relationship and patient outcomes.

Recognize dislocations clinically and on X-ray, and manage dislocations of the hip and shoulder acutely.

Identify classes of medications available for treatment of DM type 2, risks and benefits of DM medications, and medications with positive and negative impacts on comorbid conditions.

Review the epidemiology of pediatric headache, review the differential diagnosis of headaches by temporal pattern, and discuss treatment of pediatric headaches, including prophylactic therapy.

Review the new guidelines for CDL, review the limitations for CDL certification, and describe the role of the medical examiner.

Review the use and roles of spirometry, describe the limitations of spirometry interpretation, and describe the role of the medical provider and when to refer to a specialist.
