Beat 3 Neighbourhood Watch Update – crimes in January 2014

In January 2014 a total of 40 incidents were reported on beat 3, of those 21 relate to crime. Oakley was hit with a couple of dwelling burglaries and a spate of theft from motor vehicles overnight with one vehicle also being stolen.

Burglary Dwellings - at approximately 12:20 on January 2ndthe elderly occupant of a bungalow in The Drive, Oakley, saw a male standing in the hallway, on seeing her he fled, he was followed by two other males who ran from the bedroom. There was a quick response by police with the use of the helicopter, several marked and unmarked police vehicles were in attendance. Despite extensive searches at the time and further enquiries no suspects have come to light. Nothing was stolen.

A further burglary dwelling occurred during the hours of 8am and 6pm on January 8th in Oakley Lane close to the railway bridge. The offender entered by forcing a utility room window at the rear of the house, jewellery and other items were stolen. Enquiries are on-going with links to incidents locally.

Drugs- a young male was stop checked by police in the early hours in Avon Road, Oakley. He was found to be in possession of herbal cannabis which was seized and a warning given.

During the morning of January 9th three males ran on sighting a police vehicle in Oakley Lane. All three were stopped which resulted in a large amount of cannabis being seized. Two were charged with being concerned in the supply of drugs and were subsequently found guilty in court. One has been remanded on unconditional bail. The other received a fine, a 12 month conditional discharge and had drug paraphernalia confiscated.

Theft of Motor Vehicle – overnight on January 5th an insecure vehicle was stolen from the driveway of a property in MarlboroughGardens, Oakley. Enquiries are on-going.

Theft from Motor Vehicles – overnight on the same night four insecure vehicles were targeted by opportunist thieves in Barra Close, Croft Road, Park Close and Braemar Drive, Oakley. CD’s, sunglasses and keys were stolen. The investigation is on-going and has links to offences in Basingstoke. The message is clear – vehicles should be locked, if you have a garage then secure it inside.

Criminal Damage – overnight on January 17th two cars parked in the communal car park in Barra Close, Oakley were damaged. One had a scratch to thepaintwork;the other had a piece cut out of the soft-top roof which was not found. Other incidents of damage to cars have occurred recently in the same car park. Despite house to house and leaflet drops in the area no information has been forthcoming.

Obtaining by Deception – on January 24th at 13:30 hours an elderly occupant in Kings Orchard, Oakley, contacted a relative to state that persons who had carried out work on his garden were demanding to take him to the cash point for an amount of cash extortionate to the work carried out. Police attended and the males who were still present were arrested. They were found to be in possession of stolen goods. Enquiries are still on-going. Please do not employ cold callers for any work on your property etc; use a reputable company from Hampshire County Council ‘Check a Trade’. A written estimate should be provided with a 7 day ‘cooling off’ period allowed which allows the customer the chance to change their mind before work is carried out.

Sexual Assault - on January 31st a female alighted the number 8 bus in Oakley Lane at 17:50 hours and was followed by a male who had committed a minor sexual assault on her whilst on the bus. He is described as olive skinned, in his 20’s and of average build. He has short dark hair and wears hexagonal black framed glasses. He was carrying a black rucksack and spoke with a German or Eastern European accent. Do you know anyone fitting this description? Did you see anything that could assist police with the investigation? Other matters - only one incident of Anti-social behaviour relating to drugs was reported in January.

As a result of house to house, leaflet drops and neighbourhood watch alerts relating to the incidents in Oakley, many residents called in with suspicious sightings and incidents that may be beneficial to enquiries. I would like to thank them for being vigilant and for taking the time to make the calls.

Two vehicles were seized – one at the Wheatsheaf in North Waltham after the driver was found to have no insurance, the other was on the M3 near to North Waltham after the tax was found to be out of date.
